IGNOUSERVICE August01,2021 Spearman’sTwo-factortheoryofintelligence:CharlesSpearman,anEnglishpsychologistandtheoriginatoroffactoranalysiswasthefirsttoclaimthatintelligenceconsistsofgeneral‘g’factorandspecific‘s’factors.Histheoryisknownas‘TwoFactorTheory’.Oneofhismajorcontributionstothehistoryofpsychologyisthedevelopmentanduseof‘factoranalysis’.Heusedthetechniquesoffactoranalysisandcorelationalanalysistofindoutthe‘g’and‘s’factor. Factoranalysisinvolvesfindingoutthecorrelationofrelatedvariables,andthengroupingthevariablestoformclustersandderivetheunderlyingfactors.Thusalargernumberofvariablesarereducedtoalessernumberoffactors.Inhisbook,‘TheAbilitiesofMan’,Spearmanelaboratedthatallintellectualactivitiesshareasinglecommonfactorthatrunsthroughalltheactivitiesapersonperformsduringhislife.Spearmancalledthisgeneralfactoras‘mentalenergy’whichisdeterminedinnately.Apersoncannotbetrainedtohaveahigher‘g’factor.Itisapartofwhotheyare.Peoplepossessgeneralintelligenceor‘g’invaryingdegrees.Onthebasisofthisgeneralintelligence,wedescribeapersonaseitherintelligentordull.This‘g’isthemajordeterminantofone’sscoreinanyintelligencetest.Inadditiontothisgeneralor‘g’factor,herecognisedthespecificfactors,eachcalled‘s’,whicharespecifictodifferentabilities.Forexample,testofarithmetic,spatialrelationships,verbalfluency,eachofthesespecificintelligencemeasureaseparate‘s’.  Anindividual’sintelligencescorereflectstheamountof‘g’plusthemagnitudeofvarious‘s’factorspossessedbytheindividual.Forexample,one’sperformanceinspatialintelligencetestwouldbeafunctionofaperson’sgeneralintelligence(g)andhisspatialability(s).Spearmanstatisticallyanalysedtheinterrelationamongvariousscoresobtainedbydifferentindividualsonvarioustests.Apositivecorrelationbetweenanytwotestormentalfunctionimpliesafactorcommontobothor‘g’andtwospecificfactors‘s’.Letusassumethat,thetwotestsareM(mechanical)andN(numerical),thecommonfactorinthesetestsis‘g’andthespecificfactorsaresMandsN.Similarly,letV(verbal)andS(spatial)betwoothertestswith‘g’asthecommonfactorandsVandsSarethespecificfactorsasshowninFigure4aFbelow(IntheFigure4aF,grefersto‘generalability’andsrefersto‘Specificabilities’).Spearman’stheorystatesthattheobjectiveofpsychologicaltestsshouldbetomeasureindividual’s‘g’asitrunsthroughalltheabilitiesandpredictsindividual’sperformance.Individualsdifferonthebasisof‘g’theypossess.
