Theutteringofaperformativeis,orispartof,thedoingofacertainkindofaction(Austinlaterdealswiththemunderthenameillocutionaryacts),theperformanceofwhich,again,wouldnotnormallybedescribedassimply"saying"or"describing"something(cf.Austin1962,5). TheinitialexamplesofperformativesentencesAustingivesarethese: "Ido(sc.takethiswomantobemylawfulweddedwife)"–asutteredinthecourseofamarriageceremony.
