Inordertobetterunderstandwhatislanguageperformativity,wehavetodifferentiatetwotypesoflanguages:the“ordinary”language,whichweuseindailylifetoexpressourselves,andthephilosophicallanguageorthetechnicallanguagethatweusuallyworkwith,inuniversityandforresearch.ForJohnLangshawAustin,thelanguageisnotonlyusefulfordescriptionorforself-reflectionbutalsousefulwithaperformativequality.Languageallowsconnectionthroughouttheworldandonceitisactedupon,itbecomesperformative.Thissignifiesthatitimpliesconsequencesandthereforeengagesitselfwitharesponsibilityforthepersontoactuponthewordsheorshehasspoken.Aprobativeexamplewouldbetheroleofajudgeinatribunal:whenthejudgeannounces“thiscourtisnowinsession”,thesewordsareacteduponimmediatelyandimplythatthesessionofthecourthasstarted.Whiletheperformativelanguagesignifiesthatwedonotjust“say”something,weactually“do”thethingaccordingtothebiasoflanguage.
