2004年7月沒沒無聞的歐巴馬,正在競選聯邦參議員,被派任發表黨綱和政策的「基調演講」(KeynoteAddress),他親自擬稿,演說慷慨激昂,因為這次成功演講,歐巴馬在政壇一舉成名。
歐巴馬非常善於演講,比明星更有光環。
他在政壇急速崛起,深受美國民眾所喜愛,成為全國矚目的政治明星。
四年後,他傳奇性地當選美國總統,成為美國史上第一位黑人總統。
以下是此次演講逐字稿
「雖然他們並不寬裕,但他們還是設法讓我去上當地最好的學校,因為在富庶的美國,無論貧富貴賤,人人都有發展的潛能。

OnbehalfofthegreatstateofIllinois,crossroadsofanation,LandofLincoln,letmeexpressmydeepestgratitudefortheprivilegeofaddressingthisconvention.Tonightisaparticularhonorformebecause,let'sfaceit,mypresenceonthisstageisprettyunlikely.
Myfatherwasaforeignstudent,bornandraisedinasmallvillageinKenya.Hegrewupherdinggoats,wenttoschoolinatin-roofshack.Hisfather—mygrandfather—wasacook,adomesticservanttotheBritish.Butmygrandfatherhadlargerdreamsforhisson.Throughhardworkandperseverancemyfathergotascholarshiptostudyinamagicalplace,America,thatshoneasabeaconoffreedomandopportunitytosomanywhohadcomebefore.
Whilestudyinghere,myfathermetmymother.Shewasborninatownontheothersideoftheworld,inKansas.HerfatherworkedonoilrigsandfarmsthroughmostoftheDepression.ThedayafterPearlHarbormygrandfathersignedupforduty;joinedPatton'sarmy,marchedacrossEurope.
Backhome,mygrandmotherraisedababyandwenttoworkonabomberassemblyline.Afterthewar,theystudiedontheG.I.Bill,boughtahousethroughF.H.A.,andlatermovedwestallthewaytoHawaiiinsearchofopportunity.Andthey,too,hadbigdreamsfortheirdaughter.Acommondream,bornoftwocontinents.
Myparentssharednotonlyanimprobablelove,theysharedanabidingfaithinthepossibilitiesofthisnation.TheywouldgivemeanAfricanname,Barack,or"blessed,"believingthatinatolerantAmericayournameisnobarriertosuccess.Theyimagined—Theyimaginedmegoingtothebestschoolsintheland,eventhoughtheyweren'trich,becauseinagenerousAmericayoudon'thavetoberichtoachieveyourpotential.

They'rebothpassedawaynow.Andyet,Iknowthatonthisnighttheylookdownonmewithgreatpride.
Theystandhere—AndIstandheretoday,gratefulforthediversityofmyheritage,awarethatmyparents'dreamsliveoninmytwopreciousdaughters.IstandhereknowingthatmystoryispartofthelargerAmericanstory,thatIoweadebttoallofthosewhocamebeforeme,andthat,innoothercountryonearth,ismystoryevenpossible.
Tonight,wegathertoaffirmthegreatnessofourNation—notbecauseoftheheightofourskyscrapers,orthepowerofourmilitary,orthesizeofoureconomy.Ourprideisbasedonaverysimplepremise,summedupinadeclarationmadeovertwohundredyearsago:
Weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertaininalienablerights,thatamongtheseareLife,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness.
ThatisthetruegeniusofAmerica,afaith—afaithinsimpledreams,aninsistenceonsmallmiracles;thatwecantuckinourchildrenatnightandknowthattheyarefedandclothedandsafefromharm;thatwecansaywhatwethink,writewhatwethink,withouthearingasuddenknockonthedoor;thatwecanhaveanideaandstartourownbusinesswithoutpayingabribe;thatwecanparticipateinthepoliticalprocesswithoutfearofretribution,andthatourvoteswillbecounted—atleastmostofthetime.
Thisyear,inthiselectionwearecalledtoreaffirmourvaluesandourcommitments,toholdthemagainstahardrealityandseehowwe'remeasuringuptothelegacyofourforbearersandthepromiseoffuturegenerations.

ButthenIaskedmyself,"AreweservingShamusaswellasheisservingus?"Ithoughtofthe900menandwomen—sonsanddaughters,husbandsandwives,friendsandneighbors,whowon'tbereturningtotheirownhometowns.IthoughtofthefamiliesI'vemetwhowerestrugglingtogetbywithoutalovedone'sfullincome,orwhoselovedoneshadreturnedwithalimbmissingornervesshattered,butstilllackedlong-termhealthbenefitsbecausetheywereReservists.
Whenwesendouryoungmenandwomenintoharm'sway,wehaveasolemnobligationnottofudgethenumbersorshadethetruthaboutwhythey'regoing,tocarefortheirfamilieswhilethey'regone,totendtothesoldiersupontheirreturn,andtoneverevergotowarwithoutenoughtroopstowinthewar,securethepeace,andearntherespectoftheworld.
