他在政壇急速崛起,深受美國民眾所喜愛,成為全國矚目的政治明星。

四年後,他傳奇性地當選美國總統,成為美國史上第一位黑人總統。

以下是此次演講逐字稿 「雖然他們並不寬裕,但他們還是設法讓我去上當地最好的學校,因為在富庶的美國,無論貧富貴賤,人人都有發展的潛能。

」  OnbehalfofthegreatstateofIllinois,crossroadsofanation,LandofLincoln,letmeexpressmydeepestgratitudefortheprivilegeofaddressingthisconvention.Tonightisaparticularhonorformebecause,let'sfaceit,mypresenceonthisstageisprettyunlikely. Myfatherwasaforeignstudent,bornandraisedinasmallvillageinKenya.Hegrewupherdinggoats,wenttoschoolinatin-roofshack.Hisfather—mygrandfather—wasacook,adomesticservanttotheBritish.Butmygrandfatherhadlargerdreamsforhisson.Throughhardworkandperseverancemyfathergotascholarshiptostudyinamagicalplace,America,thatshoneasabeaconoffreedomandopportunitytosomanywhohadcomebefore. Whilestudyinghere,myfathermetmymother.Shewasborninatownontheothersideoftheworld,inKansas.HerfatherworkedonoilrigsandfarmsthroughmostoftheDepression.ThedayafterPearlHarbormygrandfathersignedupforduty;joinedPatton'sarmy,marchedacrossEurope. Backhome,mygrandmotherraisedababyandwenttoworkonabomberassemblyline.Afterthewar,theystudiedontheG.I.Bill,boughtahousethroughF.H.A.,andlatermovedwestallthewaytoHawaiiinsearchofopportunity.Andthey,too,hadbigdreamsfortheirdaughter.Acommondream,bornoftwocontinents. Myparentssharednotonlyanimprobablelove,theysharedanabidingfaithinthepossibilitiesofthisnation.TheywouldgivemeanAfricanname,Barack,or"blessed,"believingthatinatolerantAmericayournameisnobarriertosuccess.Theyimagined—Theyimaginedmegoingtothebestschoolsintheland,eventhoughtheyweren'trich,becauseinagenerousAmericayoudon'thavetoberichtoachieveyourpotential.   「這是美國真正的原創精神,這是對簡單夢想的一種信仰,始終相信著一直會有點點滴滴的奇蹟發生。

」 They'rebothpassedawaynow.Andyet,Iknowthatonthisnighttheylookdownonmewithgreatpride.   Theystandhere—AndIstandheretoday,gratefulforthediversityofmyheritage,awarethatmyparents'dreamsliveoninmytwopreciousdaughters.IstandhereknowingthatmystoryispartofthelargerAmericanstory,thatIoweadebttoallofthosewhocamebeforeme,andthat,innoothercountryonearth,ismystoryevenpossible. Tonight,wegathertoaffirmthegreatnessofourNation—notbecauseoftheheightofourskyscrapers,orthepowerofourmilitary,orthesizeofoureconomy.Ourprideisbasedonaverysimplepremise,summedupinadeclarationmadeovertwohundredyearsago: Weholdthesetruthstobeself-evident,thatallmenarecreatedequal,thattheyareendowedbytheirCreatorwithcertaininalienablerights,thatamongtheseareLife,LibertyandthepursuitofHappiness. ThatisthetruegeniusofAmerica,afaith—afaithinsimpledreams,aninsistenceonsmallmiracles;thatwecantuckinourchildrenatnightandknowthattheyarefedandclothedandsafefromharm;thatwecansaywhatwethink,writewhatwethink,withouthearingasuddenknockonthedoor;thatwecanhaveanideaandstartourownbusinesswithoutpayingabribe;thatwecanparticipateinthepoliticalprocesswithoutfearofretribution,andthatourvoteswillbecounted—atleastmostofthetime. Youknow,awhileback—awhilebackImetayoungmannamedShamusinaV.F.W.HallinEastMoline,Illinois.Hewasagood-lookingkid—sixtwo,sixthree,cleareyed,withaneasysmile.Hetoldmehe'djoinedtheMarinesandwasheadingtoIraqthefollowingweek.AndasIlistenedtohimexplainwhyhe'denlisted,theabsolutefaithhehadinourcountryanditsleaders,hisdevotiontodutyandservice,Ithoughtthisyoungmanwasallthatanyofusmighteverhopeforinachild. ButthenIaskedmyself,"AreweservingShamusaswellasheisservingus?"Ithoughtofthe900menandwomen—sonsanddaughters,husbandsandwives,friendsandneighbors,whowon'tbereturningtotheirownhometowns.IthoughtofthefamiliesI'vemetwhowerestrugglingtogetbywithoutalovedone'sfullincome,orwhoselovedoneshadreturnedwithalimbmissingornervesshattered,butstilllackedlong-termhealthbenefitsbecausetheywereReservists. Whenwesendouryoungmenandwomenintoharm'sway,wehaveasolemnobligationnottofudgethenumbersorshadethetruthaboutwhythey'regoing,tocarefortheirfamilieswhilethey'regone,totendtothesoldiersupontheirreturn,andtoneverevergotowarwithoutenoughtroopstowinthewar,securethepeace,andearntherespectoftheworld. Intheend—Intheend—Intheend,that'swhatthiselectionisabout.Doweparticipateinapoliticsofcynicismordoweparticipateinapoliticsofhope? JohnKerrycallsonustohope.JohnEdwardscallsonustohope.I'mnottalkingaboutblindoptimismhere—thealmostwillfulignorancethatthinksunemploymentwillgoawayifwejustdon'tthinkaboutit,orthehealthcarecrisiswillsolveitselfifwejustignoreit.
