Fixedmindsetscanleadtonegativethinking.Forinstance,apersonwithafixedmindsetmightfailatataskandbelieveit'sbecausetheyaren'tsmartenoughtodoit.Whereasagrowthmindsetpersonmightfailatthesametaskandbelieveit'sbecausetheyneedtospendmoretimepracticing. Inonestudy,highschoolstudentswerechallengedwithpuzzlesthatrangedfromeasytodifficult.Muchtothesurpriseofresearchers,somestudentsembracedfailureandtreateditasalearningexperience,andthispositiveattitudewaswhatDwecklatercoinedthe‘growthmindset’.Dweck’sresearchalsofound,contrarytopopularopinion,thatit’smorebeneficialnottopraisetalentornaturalabilitiesbutpraisetheprocess.Inparticular,effort,strategies,persistence,andresilienceshouldberewarded.Theseprocessesplayamajorroleinprovidingconstructivefeedbackandcreatingapositivestudent-teacherrelationship.Dwecklaternoted,ina2015article,thatwhileeffortisanimportantpartofagrowthmindset,itshouldn'tbethemainfocusofpraise.Effortshouldbeameanstolearningandimproving.Whenfosteringagrowthmindset,continuetellingyourself"greateffort"afterfinishingatask,butalsolookforwaystoimprovenexttime—soyoufeelgoodintheshortandlongterm.ThebenefitsofagrowthmindsetStudiesbyDweckandothersindicatethatagrowthmindsethasapositiveeffectonmotivationandacademicperformance. Onestudyexaminedtheacademicenjoymentofundergraduatestudentsafterlearningabouttheneuroplasticityofthebrain.
