Low-incomeareasproducelessfunding Publicschoolsreceivemoneylargelyfromlocaltaxes.Thismodelmayworkwellforwealthycitiesandtowns,butwhenonecitymustpayfordozensofschools,moneycanbetightandschoolsthatperformbadlymayonlyhaveaccesstothefundsthatareleftover.Charterschoolsarepubliclyfundedbutalsorelyonprivatefundingtooperateandbesuccessful,meaningthattheirsourceofincomeismuchmorestable. TheCharterSystem’sBetterUseofFunding WhilethepublicschoolsysteminAmericahasitsbenefits,oneofitsbiggestdisadvantagesisthatwherestudentslivelargelydeterminestheamountoffundingtheirschoolsreceive.Forchildreninaffluentneighborhoodsandcommunities,theeducationsystemiswellsuppliedandhasteachersclamoringforpositions.Forlesswealthyareas,fundingisoftentoolittle,toolate.Charterschoolsofferanotheroptiontofamilieswhoaredissatisfiedwiththeirneighborhoodpublicschool.Enrollmentinacharterschoolisnon-selective,voluntary,andfree.Therefore,ifacharterschooldoesnotachieveacertainlevelofsuccessandmeetthestandardssetforthbylaw,familiescanchoosetoleavetoattendanotherschoolortheirchartercanevenberevoked.Theresultisanextremelycompetitiveeducationsystemwhencomparedtopublicschoolsandevensomeprivateinstitutions. InternationalCompetition Astheworldbecomesmoretechnologicallylinked,competitionforcareersbecomesnotonlyadomesticstruggle,butaninternationalfightaswell.Despitespendingmoreonpubliceducationthananyothercountry,theUnitedStatesfrequentlylagsbehindotherdevelopedareasoftheworldinstudenttestscores,especiallyinmathandscience.AnexcellentwayforparentstomakesuretheirchildacquirestheknowledgeandskillsheorshewillneedtosucceedincollegeandbeyondistotakeactionandinvestigatethebenefitsofattendingacharterschoolliketheSTEM-focused,college-prepschoolsmanagedbythesuccessfulConceptSchoolscharterschoolsystem.
