Theshifttoonlineschooling,usheredinbytheCOVID-19pandemic,hasdelayedsomestudents'learningbybetweentwoandthreemonths. IntheUS,teacherssaidstudentswere2.4monthsbehindtheirexpectedlearningmilestonesinNovember.IntheUK,McKinsey’sassessmentwasthatstudentswerearound2.8monthsbehind,whileteachersinlocalsurveysbelieveditwasclosertothreemonths. WhatistheWorldEconomicForumdoingtoimprovedigitalintelligenceinchildren? Thelatestfiguresshowthat56%of8-12-year-oldsacross29countriesareinvolvedinatleastoneoftheworld'smajorcyber-risks:cyberbullying,video-gameaddiction,onlinesexualbehaviourormeetingwithstrangersencounteredontheweb. UsingtheForum'splatformtoaccelerateitsworkglobally,#DQEveryChild,aninitiativetoincreasethedigitalintelligencequotient(DQ)ofchildrenaged8-12,hasreducedcyber-riskexposureby15%. InMarch2019,theDQGlobalStandardsReport2019waslaunched–thefirstattempttodefineaglobalstandardfordigitalliteracy,skillsandreadinessacrosstheeducationandtechnologysectors. Wealthierstudents,andthoseattendingprivateschools,weremorelikelytoparticipateinonlinelessonsandcompletetheircoursework,teacherssaid.Thisislikelytobeduetothemhavingthenecessaryequipmentathomesuchascomputersandreliableinternetaccess. “Teachersinhigh-povertyschoolsfoundvirtualclassestobeespeciallyineffective,bolsteringconcernsthatthepandemichasexacerbatededucationalinequalities,”thereportsays. Childrenwithinthe‘at-risk’category(characterizedbyemotionalorbehaviouralchallenges,lowacademicperformance,orunstablehomelives)werealsomorelikelytobefurtherbehind. “Ithinkwhatthisshows,onlearningloss,isthatit’snotjustremotelearningthatiscausingstudentdelays,”DornstatesinaQ&A-stylevideoontheMcKinseywebsite. Mindingthegap Thelongerschoolpremisesremainclosed,thegreaterthelikelihoodoftheseinequalities,ofcourse.Yet,evenshortclosureswerefoundtocauseproblems,thesurveyfound. HighlightingschoolclosuresinPakistanfollowinganearthquakein2005,thereportsaysthat14weeksofclosureleftsomestudentsmorethanayearbehind,educationally,whencomparedtopeersfromunaffectedregions.Thatproblemhadpersistedforfouryears,McKinseysays. TheFourthIndustrialRevolutionhascompletelytransformedmanyindustrialanddistributivetrades,andcreatedwholenewmarkets.Bycomparison,education,formostchildrenandyoungpeoplearoundtheworld,stillbearssimilaritiestotheVictorianera.Agroupofstudentssittinginaroomreceivinginstructionfromapersonatthefrontoftheclass. Asschools,universitiesandentirenationaleconomiesstarttoopenupagain,fillingstudents’learninggapswillbecomeapriority.
