WhatStudentsandEducatorsNeedandExpect Everyonehashadavastlydifferentexperienceteachingandlearningfromhome.Thoseexperiencesshapetheirexpectationsforwhattheywantthelearningexperiencetobelikeinthefuture. PriortoandduringtheCOVID-19pandemic,SteelcaseLearningresearchersusedmultiplemethodstounderstandthevalueofblendedlearningandwellbeingtoeducationaloutcomesandhowspacecanplayaroletoensureanenhancedexperience.PriortoCOVID-19,researchersvisitedbothK-12schoolsanduniversities,interviewededucatorsandstudents,observedblendedlearningmodelsandbuiltprototypes.Sincetheonsetofthepandemic,they’veusedaremotediaryplatformtoassesshowonlinelearningisgoingforteachersandstudents.Steelcasealsoconductedmultiplestudiesin10countriestobetterunderstandtheimpactthepandemichashadonworkers.Synthesizingallthesestudiesuncoveredfiveoverarchingneedsthatwilldrivemacroshiftsintheoveralllearningandworkexperienceandleadtonewwaysofplanninganddesigninglearningenvironments. MacroShiftsInTheLearningExperience Tobeabletocreatebetterteachingandlearningexperiencesthatprovidestudentsandeducatorswithwhattheywantandexpect,institutionswillneedtopayattentiontofourmacroshiftsinhowtheythinkaboutspace. DesignSaferSchools Behavioralstrategies,suchasmaskwearinganddistancing,needtobeaugmentedwithchangestothebuiltenvironment.Educationalinstitutionscanmaketheirbuildingsevensaferbyintentionallydesigningthebuiltenvironmenttohelpmitigatediseasetransmission.Understandinghowpathogensmovethroughanenvironmentwillhelpeducationalinstitutionsdevelopnewsystemicstrategiestohelppreventinfections. DesignforEffectiveness Studentsandeducatorshavestruggledthroughoutthepandemic.Learningandteachingeffectivenesshavedropped.Movingforwardstudentsandeducatorswillneedmulti-modallearningenvironmentsthatbalanceindividualandgroupneedsandmultiplemodesoflearning.Forexample,librariescanbedesignedtosupportgroupworkandnotjustindividualstudy.Schoolswillalsoneedtoprovidespacesthatenablebetterhybridandblendedlearningexperiences. DesigntoInspire Peoplewhohavelivedthroughacrisiswantinspiration—theyneedtobeapartofsomethingmeaningful.Educationalinstitutionswillneedtocreateasenseofbelongingandfostercommunity.Whenstudentsareabletoconnectwiththeirinstructorsandhaveaccesstoinspiringspacesthatbuildastrongcommunity,thiscanleadtobetterlearningoutcomes.Intentionally-designedlearningenvironmentscanfostermeaningfulinteractionsandsignalthatchangeandadaptationarepartoftheircultureandsomethingtobeembraced. DesignforFlexibility Historicallydesignedforpermanence,buildingshavebeendominatedbyfixedarchitecture,powerandfurnishings.Goingforward,educationalinstitutionswilloffermoreflexibleenvironmentsthatcanadapteasilytoaccommodatemultiplelearningmodes.Schoolswillneedtoembracemulti-usespacesthatcansupportdiversetypesofactivities.Furnishingswilleasilymovetoallowspacestoexpandandcontractasneeded.
