BewareoftheFalseGrowthMindset SincethereleaseofDweck’sMindsetbookin2006,agrowingawarenessoffixedandgrowthmindsetshasenteredtheeducationandpersonaldevelopmentfields. Thisisanimportantdistinction. TheTricky,HiddenFixedMindset Ihavebeeninterestedinself-developmenteversinceIwaseighteen. WhenIfirstreadMindset,IassumedthatIhadagrowthmindsetthroughoutmyadultlife. However,overtime,IbegantoobservehowIwassubconsciouslybeinginfluencedbyafixedmindset. Forexample,eventhoughImightputforththe efforttolearnsomethingnew,mylearningwasoftenstagnant. IwasconstantlyhittingawallwhenItriedtomakechangestomypersonalityorlearntoplaytheguitar. This,Ieventuallyrealized,wasduetoa fixedmindset,conditionedduringchildhood. AlthoughIhavedevelopedpartsofmypsycheinadulthoodthathaveagrowthmindset,allofmychildandadolescentpartsstillhaveafixedmindset.That’swhyweallhavefixed-mindsettriggers. Soifyou’reonagrowthpath,butoftentimesfeellikeyou’reflounderingorgettingstuckonaplateau,anunrecognizedfixedmindsetcouldbethereason. Identifyingthefixed-mindsetvoiceandthetriggersthatawakenitisthekeytochangingyourmindset. Andifthestrategyisn’tworking,whatdoesitmeanaboutyou?Absolutelynothing.Itsimplymeansyouhaven’tfoundtherightstrategy.
