Criticism[edit] WhileBaron-Cohenetal.'sdatahavebeenpurportedtoindicatealackoftheoryofmindinautisticchildren,thereareotherpossiblefactorsaffectingthem.Forinstance,autisticindividualsmaypassthecognitivelysimplerrecalltask,butlanguageissuesinbothautisticchildrenanddeafcontrolstendtoconfoundresults.[5] Ruffman,Garnham,andRideout(2001)furtherinvestigatedlinksbetweentheSally–Annetestandautismintermsofeyegazeasasocialcommunicativefunction.Theyaddedathirdpossiblelocationforthemarble:thepocketoftheinvestigator.Whenautisticchildrenandchildrenwithmoderatelearningdisabilitiesweretestedinthisformat,theyfoundthatbothgroupsansweredtheBeliefQuestionequallywell;however,participantswithmoderatelearningdisabilitiesreliablylookedatthecorrectlocationofthemarble,whileautisticparticipantsdidnot,eveniftheautisticparticipantansweredthequestioncorrectly.[6]Theseresultsmaybeanexpressionofthesocialdeficitsrelevanttoautism.
