ThisincludessituationswhereworkersdriveorcycletonearbyMRTstationsbeforetakingthetrain,althoughsuchinstanceshavedecreasedinthepastdecade. Theshareofthosewhoreliedsolelyonacarfortheirworkcommutesdroppedfrom24.8percentto21.1percent,whiletheproportionwhotravelledonlybytaxiorprivate-hirecarincreasedfrom1.3percentto3percentoverthesameperiod. Theshareofresidentswhousedothertransportmodes,suchasmotorcyclesandprivatecharteredbuses,alsofelloverthepast10years. About9.8percentofresidentssaidtheydonotneedanytransporttogettowork,upfrom7.5percentin2010. TheDepartmentofStatistics(DOS)toldTheStraitsTimesthatrespondentswerealsoallowedtopicktransportmodessuchascyclingandpersonalmobilitydevices. LTAsaidthelatestfindingsareencouragingandwillhelpshapeitsplanstoachieve45-minutecommutestothecityand20-minutecommutestotownsviawalk-cycle-ridetransportmodesby2040. WithmorebusinessnodesandindustrialestatestobebuiltoutsidetheCentralBusinessDistrictoverthenextdecade,morejobswillbebroughtclosertohomes,itadded. Significantenhancementstothetransportinfrastructure,includingtransitprioritycorridorsandcontinuedexpansionoftherailnetwork,willencouragemorepeopletocommutetoworkviapublictransport,itsaid. SingaporeUniversityofSocialSciencestransporteconomistWalterTheseirasaidwhatisofgreaterconcernisthattheuseofnon-motorisedtransportsuchasbicyclesdoesnotseemtohaveimproved. Ontheincreaseintraveltimetoworkonbusesandtrains,AssociateProfessorTheseiraechoedwhattheDOSsaidinitsreport-thatthiscouldbeduetoimprovedconnectivity,whichencouragespeopletotakeupjobsfartheraway,andpopulationgrowthinoutlyingareas,ratherthanpublictransportheregettinglessefficient. ProfTheseiraaddedthatcensusdataaloneisnotenoughtoassesswhetherimprovementstothepublictransportsystemhaveworkedout.
