Thenumberofdailyjourneysmadeusing privatelyownedvehiclesfellto4.2million,a13per cent reductionfrom2013.TheLTAsaidthispointstoapossibleshift,withSingaporeresidents switchingfromprivatevehiclestopublictransportfortheirdailycommute. SincetheintroductionofprivatehirecarssuchasGrabin2013,thenumberoftaxirideshasalmost halved. Theincreaseduseofpublictransportcorrelateswithanincreaseintouristarrivals. Therefore,increasedpatronageofpublictransportcouldalsobeattributedtoahigherdensityofpeopleusing it suchastouristsasopposedtomerelymoreSingaporeresidentsneedingtransportation. Thisisupfrom2.3millionridesadayin2012.Thisincreasecoincideswiththeinjectionofmoretrainsinto the systemaswellastheexpansionoftherailnetwork. Railreliabilityhasalsoseenimprovementsoverthisperiod,withtheMRTnetworkhittingone millionkilometresbetweendelays,asevenfoldimprovementfrom2015. Rentalcars Theoverallnumberofrentalcarshasriseninthelastfiveyearsfromjust16,396in2013to66,480in2018. However,thisyear’snumberhasdippedfrom68,083in2017,whichcouldinpartbeattributedtoUber pulling outofthemarketinthesameyear.  Publictransportduringpeakperiods Peakhourtripsonpublictransportincreasedfrom63%in2012to67%in2017. Peakhourtripsonpublictransporthaveseenasteadyincreaseoverthelast10years.In2008,59%ofall journeys duringpeakhoursweremadeusingpublictransport.Thisincreaseisinlinewithgovernmenttargetsof75%by 2030. Journeytime Morepeoplearealsoexperiencingshortercommutes,withthenumberofdailybusandtraintripsunder20km completed withinanhourincreasingfrom76percentin2012to79percentin2016. Headingwelltowardsgovernmenttargetsofhaving85%ofsuchjourneyscompletedwithin60minutesby2030. TheaveragecommuteonpublictransportforSingaporeans. FarerevenueperpassengerkilometreinSingaporeisaround11centsfortheentirepublictransportsystem. Subsidisedfares Concessionratesarenowgiventochildren,students,seniorcitizens,nationalservicemen,peoplewith disabilities andthoseonworkfareincomesupplements. Childrenbelow0.9minheightandaccompaniedbyafee-payingcommutertravelforfreeontrainsandbuses. Averagefaresarenow4to7centslowerthantheywerein 2015. ThePublicTransportCouncil'sdecisiononfareadjustmentwillbeannouncedinthelastquarterof2019.Faresareexpected to riseby7%. Ticketing TheconvenienceandflexibilityoftheSingaporeanticketingsystemhasreceivedglobalrecognitionandissaid tobe anoutstandingfeature. Alltrainandbusjourneyscanbepaidforusingcash,contactlessstoredvaluecardsaswellas Mastercard®or Visacontactlesscreditanddebitcards.  TheSingaporeLandTransportMasterPlan Tomeetincreasingtraveldemandthegovernmentsaysahigherproportionoftravelneedswillhavetobemetby publictransport.Itisthereforevital,itsays,tomakepublictransportthemodeofchoiceforSingaporeans. TheLandTransportMasterPlanlaunchedin2013setoutgoalstobeachievedby2030.Keygoalsare; 8in10householdslivingwithin10minutes’walkofatrainstation; 85%ofourmasspublictransportjourneysunder20kmcompletedwithin60minutes;and 75%ofalljourneysduringpeakhoursmadeonpublictransport. HowsatisfiedareSingaporeanswiththeirpublictransport? Commutersbecamemoresatisfiedwithpublictransportin2018,accordingtoasurveycommissionedbythePublic TransportCouncil(PTC). Thepoll,conductedattheendof2018,showedthesatisfactionscorerisingto7.9(outof10),from7.7in 2017.It wasthefourthconsecutiveimprovementsince2014. ThesatisfactionimprovementwaslargerfortheMRT,withthescorerisingfrom7.5in2017(adipfrom2016)to 7.9. Thismatchedthesatisfactionlevelforbuses,whichremainedunchangedat7.9. Ofthe5,000peoplepolled,77.8percentfeltbusserviceshadimprovedinthelastoneyear,downfrom80.8per centintheprecedingone-yearperiod,while72.1percentfelttheMRThadimproved,upsharplyfrom50.3per cent previously.  Othermodesoftransport Motorvehiclepopulation FiguresreleasedbytheLandTransportAuthorityfor2018revealthattotalvehiclepopulationinSingapore shrunkby 0.5percentto957,006,thelowestsince2016. Privatepassengercars Overall,therehasbeenareductioninthenumberofprivatecarsinSingaporesince2013. Thenumberofprivately-ownedcarsin2018standsat551,575.Thisisareductionof55,000privatecarssince 2013 whentherewere607,292. Residenthouseholdcarownershipfell39percentcomparedto46percentin2013. Thenumberofdailyjourneysmadeusing privatelyownedvehiclesfellto4.2million,a13percentdecrease from4.8millionin2013. TheLTAsaidthispointstoapossibleshift,withSingaporeresidentsswitchingfromprivatevehiclestopublic transportfortheirdailycommute. Thedeclinealsocoincideswithsignificantimprovementsinpublictransportandtheriseoftheuseofprivate hire carsinsteadofpersonalcarsoverthesameperiod. Motorcyclesandscooters ThemotorcycleandscooterpopulationinSingaporecurrentlystandsat139,311asofJuly2019.Thishas steadily droppedsince2017,whentherewere141,916motorcyclesandscootersontheroads. TheoveralldownwardtrendinthemotorcyclepopulationislikelytohavebeenimpactedbytheNational Environment Agency'sofferof$3,500forriderstoscraptheiroldervehicles. ThedwindlingmotorcyclepopulationhasalsobeenattributedtothefallingCertificateOfEntitlementquota. Open COEsaresecuredalmostexclusivelybycarbidders,somotorcyclesloseaportionoftheirCOEsupply-which eventuallyinfluencesthemotorcyclepopulation-yearbyyear. Andagain,thedeclinecoincideswithimprovementsinpublictransport. Measurestoreducecarownership Costofcarownership.AsSingaporeissmallandspaceconstraintamajorconcern,pushing pricesof carsupwardsseemstobeaviablemeasureadoptedbythegovernment. Singaporeisoneofthemostexpensiveplacesintheworldtoownacar.Anewcompactcarcostsaround$99,000. Basedonthesamecar,Singaporecarpricesin2019areupto6timesmoreexpensivethan;Australia(US$18,365), up to5.5timesmorethanChina(US$20,725)and5timesmoreexpensivethanAmerica(US$21,845).Whilstpricesin LondonforthesamecarworkoutataroundUS$23,00. TherearemanyfeesinvolvedinowningacarinSingaporethatmakeitprohibitivelyexpensive.Theseinclude; Registrationfees OpenMarketValue(OMV) ExciseDuty CertificateofEntitlement AdditionalRegistrationFee(ARF) VehicularEmissionsScheme(VES) Others WorthnotingtooisthatSingapore'scarownershiprateisroughly11%.IntheUS,itisnearly80%anditis justunder50%inEurope. Vehiclegrowthrate Inland-scarceSingapore,thegovernmentcontinuestosteerthecountrytowardsbecomingacar-litesocietyby moderatingvehiclepopulationgrowthrate. AspartoftheLandTransportMasterplan2008,thegrowthratewasreducedfrom3%to1.5%fromMay2009toJuly 2012.Theannualvehiclegrowthratewasfurtherreducedto1%inAugust2012,andto0.5%fromFebruary2013to January2015.FromFebruary2015,theannualvehiclegrowthratewasagainhalvedto0.25%. In2018thenewgrowthcapwascuttozeroforallprivatepassengercars(CategoriesAandB)andmotorcycles (CategoryD). Publicroads Buildingmoreandmoreroadsisnotsustainable,especiallygivenSingapore’slandconstraints.In2019, about 12%ofthecountry’slandareaisalreadyusedforroads,comparedtoabout14%forhousing. Thegovernmenthasthusoptedforvehicleownershipcontrolstomaintainthevehiclepopulationatlevels supportable byroadinfrastructureaswellasplanneddevelopmentsinpublictransportandtrafficmanagementsystems. In2018,approximately9,405lane-kilometresofroadswerepaved,representinganincreasefrom9,293 lane-kilometres in2017. Congestion Singaporecurrentlyranks88thinaglobalindexof405citiesfortrafficcongestiononroadsinpeakhours, comparedto54thplacein2017. LateststatisticsshowthatSingaporehasanaveragecongestionlevelof31%-calculatedbyhowmuchlonger drivers spendontheircommuteduringpeakhourscomparedtonon-peakhours. Thiscomparesto33%in2017,showingthere’sbeena2%reductionintrafficcongestionin2018,according to thestudycarriedoutbyTomTom. SingaporeranksbetterthanLondonwhichhasacongestionlevelof37%(40thplace)andNewYorkwith36% congestion levels(42ndplace). In2015Singaporehadacongestionlevelof31%,thesameaswasrecordedin2018. Singaporeistheworld'sthirdmostdenselypopulatedplacewith7,804peoplepersquare kilometre. BehindMacauinfirstplaceandMonacoin2ndplace. That’saccordingtoa2019reportbyWorldAtlas. AstudybytheLandTransportAuthorityfoundthefollowing;onasingletripatfullcapacity,asingle-deckbus carriesupto90passengersandasix-cartraincarriesupto1,600passengers,whileanaveragepassengercar sedan onlycarriesupto5persons.Comparingenergyuseamongthedifferentmodesoftransportperpassenger kilometre, thecaruses9timesmoreenergythantakingabusand12timesmoreenergythantakingatrain. Italsoaimstoboosttheappealofcyclingandwalkingastransportoptions,investingininfrastructuresuchas moreshelteredwalkways,cyclingpathsandbicycleracksatMRTstations. Activemobilityjourneys Aboutaquarterofhouseholdshereownbicycles,withabout125,000peopleusingthemfortheirdailycommutes. TripsmadeusingPersonalMobileDevices(PMD),bicyclesandonfootalsowentupfrom2.2millionin2012to2.6 millionin2017. Theincreaseinthenumberofcyclingtowns,aswellastheongoingexpansionofthenetworkofsheltered walkways andcyclingpathshavealsohelpedmakewalking,cyclingandtheuseofPMDsviablemodesforshortjourneys. Singaporepublictransportversusglobal Singaporeissaidtohavecreatedabest-in-classpublictransportsystem,whichis “accessible, efficient,convenient,sustainable,andatthesametimeaffordable,"accordingto a 2018reportbyconsultingfirmMcKinsey. Singaporeclinchedthetopspotforpublictransportaffordability,andalsoscoredwellintransportefficiency and safety. Affordability;Intermsofpublictransportaffordability,theleaderswereSingapore,Los Angeles, andChicago:theyhaverelativelylowmonthlytransportticketpricescomparedtoaveragemonthlyincome,they providesubsidiesforseveralpassengercategories,andalsohaverelativelyaffordabletaxifares. Sustainability.Singaporealsoscoredahighratingforsustainability,withoneofthe "safest andmostecologicallysustainable"publictransportsystems,accordingtothereport.  Safety.Threeleadingcities,whicharefaraheadofthecompetitors,areHongKong,Paris,and Singapore.Thesecitieshavethesafesttransportationsystems—thenumberofroadcasualtiesisonaverage the lowestthere.
