GrowthandChangesDuringPuberty Puberty—orsexualdevelopment—isatimeofdramaticchangeforbothboysandgirls.Hormone-drivenchangesareaccompaniedbygrowthspurtsthattransformkidsintophysicallymatureteensastheirbodiesdevelop. It'simportantforthemtohavehealthyeatinghabits,awell-balanceddiet,andsomephysicalactivityeachdaytoensurecontinuedgrowthandproperdevelopmentduringtheseyears. ChangesinGirls Eventsingirlsastheygothroughpuberty: Breastsbegintodevelopandhipsbecomerounded. Anincreasedrateofgrowthinheightbegins. Pubichairbeginstoappear,usuallywithin6to12monthsafterthestartofbreastdevelopment. Theuterusandvagina,aswellaslabiaandclitoris,increaseinsize. Pubichairiswellestablishedandbreastsgrowfurther. Therateofgrowthinheightreachesitspeakabout2yearsafterthestartof puberty. Menstruationbegins,almostalwaysafterthepeakgrowthrateinheight(averageageis12.5years). Oncegirlsstarttomenstruate,theyusuallygrowabout1or2moreinches,reachingtheirfinaladultheightbyaboutage14or15years(youngerorolderdependingonwhenpubertybegan). ChangesinBoys Boystendtoshowthefirstphysicalchangesofpubertybetweentheagesof10and16.Theytendtogrowmostquicklybetweenages12and15.Thegrowthspurtofboysis,onaverage,about2yearslaterthanthatofgirls.Byage16,mostboyshavestoppedgrowing,buttheirmuscleswillcontinuetodevelop. Otherfeaturesofpubertyinboysinclude: Thepenisandtesticlesincreaseinsize. Pubichairappears,followedbyunderarmandfacialhair. Thevoicedeepensandmaysometimescrackorbreak. TheAdam'sapple,orlarynxcartilage,getsbigger. Testiclesbegintoproducesperm. AttheDoctor'sOffice Normalgrowth—supportedbygoodnutrition,enoughsleep,andregularexercise—isoneofthebestoverallindicatorsofyourteen'sgoodhealth. Despitedatacollectedforgrowthcharts,"normal"heightsandweightsaredifficulttodefine.Yourteen'sgrowthpatternislargelydeterminedbygenetics.Shorterparents,forinstance,tendtohaveshorterkids,whereastallerparentstendtohavetallerkids. Althoughyoumayworryifyourchildisn'tastallasotherclassmates,themoreimportantquestioniswhetheryourchildiscontinuingtogrowatanormalrate.Ifyourdoctordetectsaproblem—suchasagrowthratethathadbeennormalbuthasrecentlyflattened—heorshemaytrackyourchild'smeasurementscarefullyoverseveralmonthstoseewhetherthegrowthpatternsuggestsapossiblehealthproblemorisjustavariationofnormal. It'snotunusualforteenstohavetheirownconcernsabouthowthey'regrowingandhowtheylook.Girlscanbeverycriticaloftheirownweight,whichcansometimesleadtounhealthybodyimageconcernsanddietingpractices.Boystendtobemoreconcernedwiththeirheightandmuscledevelopment,whichcanalsoleadtounhealthypractices,likeusingsteroidsandproteinsupplements. Ifyou'reconcernedaboutyourteen'sbodyimage,oreatingandexercisehabits,talkwiththedoctor. Manyteensworryalotaboutbeingdifferentfromtheirpeersandaboutanythingthatwouldmakethemnotfitinorseem"normal." Encourageyourteentobringupanyoftheseconcernswiththedoctor,ifheorshefeelscomfortabledoingso.Thedoctorcanprovidereassurancethatotherkidshavethesameconcernsabouttheirsize.
