Childrenwithprecociouspubertyexperienceearlygrowthspurtsbecauseoftheabnormallyearlyriseinsexhormonelevelsintheirbodies.Initiallythiscausesthesechildrentogrowtallerthanotherkidstheirage,buttheirskeletonsmaturemorerapidly.Oftenthiscausesthemtostopgrowingatanearlyage,andtheyendupbeingaverageorbelowaverageheightasadults.TooMuchGrowthHormone(Hyperpituitarism)Twoconditionsarisefromexcessiveamountsofgrowthhormoneinthebody: acromegaly andgigantism.Acromegalyisaconditioninadultsthatiscausedbyanincreasedsecretionofthegrowthhormoneafternormalgrowthhasstopped.Itisveryrare.Becauseadultscannotgrowtaller,theexcessgrowthhormoneinacromegalycausesanadult'sbonestothickenandotherstructuresandorganstogrowlarger.Gigantismoccurswhenthereisanexcessivesecretionofgrowthhormoneinchildrenbeforetheirnormalgrowthhasstopped.Thisresultsinovergrowthofthelongbones.Inadditiontoverticalgrowthinheight,thereisalsogrowthinmuscleandorgans.Theresultisapersonwhoisverytall,withalargejaw,largeface,largeskull,andverylargehandsandfeet.IfYouHaveConcernsaboutYourChild'sHeightIfyouareconcernedaboutyourchild'sheightorthinkthatyourchildmaybegrowingtoofast,talktoyourpediatrician.Ifneeded,yourpediatriciancanorderfurthertests.Asimplex-rayofthehandandwristmayshowhowmuchgrowthyourchildhasleft.Labtestscanalsohelpfindthecauseofgrowthproblemsandhowtotreatthem.Youmayalsobereferredtoa pediatricendocrinologist, pediatricgeneticist,orotherpediatricspecialistforfurtherevaluationandtreatment.AdditionalInformationPredictingofChild'sAdultsHeightHowtoReadaGrowthChart:PercentilesExplainedYourFamilyHealthHistory&GeneticsWhatisaPediatricEndocrinologist?
