AdivineserviceisheldoverthedeadbodyofeveryMuslim,youngorold,evenofinfantswhohavelivedonlyafewminutes.Whenthesoulleavesthebody,preparationsaremadeforbiddinghimthelastfarewell.Itishighlyrecommendedthat,afterwashingandshroudingthebodyofthedeceased,thebodynottobekeptlong,butrathertakenquickly,prayedfor,andthenburied.SalatulJanazahisrequiredtobeperformedincongregationtorequestpardonandprayforthedeceased.ItispreferablethatSalatulJanazahbeperformedoutsidetheMosqueortheMusalla(Prayerroom),likeintheMosqueactivityroomsorcourtyardsandmayevenbeperformedatthecemetery.SalatulJanazahisacollectiveobligation.AMuslimshouldnothesitatetoparticipateinit,whetherornotthedeceasedorhisrelativesareknowntohim.SalatulJanazahissaidsilently,excepttheTakbeerandTassleem.AllconditionsforregularSalatarerequiredinSalatulJanazahsuchasTahara,Wudu,cleanbodyandclothes,neeyah(intention),andfacingtheQiblah.TherearespecifictimeswhenitisprohibitedtoperformSalatulJanazah,unlessitbecomesnecessary,duetotheconditionofthebody,toperformitquicklyandthenburythebody.Theseprohibitedtimesare:FromsunriseuntilthesunisfullyrisenAtthezenithofthesun(thesunatmeridian),untilitpassesthemeridianFromwhenthesunpalesbeforesunsetuntilithasset.STEPSOFSALATULJANAZAH:MuslimsshouldformaminimumofthreelinesfacingtheQiblah.TheonewholeadstheSalatistheleaderorhisdeputy,orthedeceased’sfather.IfthereisonlyoneMuslimwiththeImam,heshouldstandbehindtheImam.Thebody(ies)shouldbeplacedinfrontofthepersonwholeadstheprayer.Incasetherearemorethanonedeceased(malesandfemales),thenthefemaleshouldbeplacedinthefirstrowinthedirectionoftheQiblah,thenthemaleinthefollowingrow,thentheImam.Forexample:Ifthereare:adeadMuslimmale,afemale,ayounggirl,andayoungboy,thenbehindtheQiblah,firstplacethebodyoftheyounggirl,thentheadultfemale,thentheyoungboy,thentheadultmale,sothebodiesarearrangedinawaythatfemalebodiesarefirst,thenthemalesTheImamshouldstandbythemiddleofafemalebody,andbytheheadforamalebody,thisisduetotheHadithinwhichAnasrelatedthatProphetMuhammad(PBUH)leadingSalatulJanazahforadeadmale,theProphet(PBUH)stoodinfrontofthedeceasedhead,andforadeadfemale,theProphet(PBUH)stoodinfrontofthemiddleofherbody.(Authentic-AbuDawood).InanotherHadithSamurabenJundubsaidwhenProphetMuhammad(PBUH)madeSalatulJanazahforadeadMuslimfemale,hestoodinfrontofherwaist(Muslim).BehindtheImam,malesstandinlines,thenchildren,thenfemales.ThereareNORukuh,Sujud,Athan,orIqama.Havingtheappropriateneeyah(Intention),raiseyourhandsintheusualmanner: Say"AllahuAkbar"FoldyourrighthandoverthelefthandintheusualmannerRecitetheThanasilently(forShafi'imazhab-reciteSurahFateha)Thensay:"AllahuAkbar"ThenrecitetheDurood-e-Ibrahim Thensay:"AllahuAkbar"Thenmakedua’(Supplicate)forthedeceasedThensay:"AllahuAkbar"TheImamwillthenmakesalamThenmakedua(supplicate)foralldeadMuslims.TheTashahudis: (Allahummasalleeala-Muhammadwa’alaaleeMuhammadkamasallaytaalaIbrahimwaalaaleeIbrahim,wabarikalaMuhammadwa’alaaleeMuhammadkamabaraktaalaIbrahimwaalaaleeIbrahim,innakahamidunMajeed).Thismeans: "OAllah!GrantpeacetoMuhammadandhisfamilyasyoudidtoIbrahimandhisfamily.OAllah!BlessMuahammadandhisfamilyasyoublessedIbrahimandhisfamily.TrulyyouareMostGloriousandMostPraiseworthy".Inthecaseofadeadbabyoryoungchild,makedua(supplicate)forhisparents.Thensay:"Assalamualykum",likeyousayinotherSalah.Tasleemissaidtwiceforthehanafimazhaboncefortheothers.NOTE:SalatulJanazahfortheonewhodiedfarawayisallowed.Touseacoffinforburialisusuallynotpermissible,unlessthereisnecessitytouseit,suchasthebodyofthedeceasedisdamaged,orforhealthreasons,orwhenthegraveiswetandcannotbedried. Daffan(TheBurial) Islamhasauniquestyleofbuildinggravesandcemeteriesthatischaracterizedbyhumility,simplicityandeconomyincostsandthatavoidsglorifyingthedeadwithelaboratemonuments.ItisofgreatimportancethataspecialcemeterybedevotedexclusivelyfortheuseofMuslims.Muslimsmaynotbeburiedinthecemeteriesofnon-Muslims,norcannon-MuslimsbeburiedinaMuslimcemetery.Thedeceasedshouldbeburiedinthelocalityinwhichhelived.Itisundesirabletotakethebodytotheperson’sowncountryortoanothercity.InMuslimcemeteries,thereareatleasttwotypesofgraves:Al-Shaqq:istomakeadeepverticalholeintheground.Al-Lahed:istomakeadeepverticalholeintheground,theninthebottommakeasidehorizontalholebigenoughtocoverthewholebody.Bothtypesareused,butitispreferabletouseAl-Lahadifthelandissolid.Howevertheremaybesomevariationindifferentcountriesdependingonlocalsoiltypeandlocalconditions.Theburialshouldbedoneassoonaspossibleafterdeath,butthefollowingtimesshouldbeavoided:Lateatnight,fromsunriseuntilthesunisfullyrisen,atthezenithofthesun(Thesunatthemeridian),untilitpassesthemeridian,whenthesunpalesbeforesunsetuntilithasset.Duringthesetimesburyingisprohibitedunlessthereisanurgentnecessity,accordingtotheHadithoftheProphetMuhammad(PBUH)thatwasnarratedby(Muslim).STEPSOFBURIAL:Itisimportanttoobserveworkplacehealthandsafetyrulesbothforthefamily,friendsandfuneraldirectors.Familymembersenteringthegravetolowerthebodyin,areadvisedtouseastepladdertoenterandexitthegrave.KindlynotethatcarryingthejanazahandloweringintothegroundisanIslamicrequirementandthatMFSLtdisnotresponsibleforanyinjuriessustainedduringthisprocessbyfamily,friendsorvolunteers.Agraveisdugdeepenoughtototallyhidethebodyofthedeceased,inBrisbaneabout1.7mdeepThegraveshouldbealwaysbeperpendicular(horizontal)tothedirectionofQiblah.Onlymenareallowedtoattendtheburial.AllMuslimswhoarepresentshouldrememberdeath,thehereafter,andthatonedayhetoowillbeburied.Theyshouldkeepquiet(Notalkingunlessitisnecessary).Thedeceased’smalerelativesareexpectedtoputthebodyinthegrave,puttingthebodyinthegraveshouldbecarriedoutonlybyMuslimmen.Afemaleisplacedinhergraveeitherbyherhusband,hersons,herfather,herbrothers,orheruncle.Thedeceased’sbodyshouldbeenteredtothegravefromthedirectionwherehisfeetwillbe(Fromtherearofthegrave).Thosewhoenterthebodyofthedeceasedinthegraveshouldsay:(Bismilllahwaalamillatirasulilllah),whichmeans: "InthenameofAllahandinthefaithoftheMessengerofAllah".Thedeceased’sbodyshouldrestonhisrightside,andshouldbeclosetothewallandsupportedsothatthebodywillnotfallback,thedeceased’sfaceshouldbetowardstheQiblah.Thosewhoputthedeceasedinthegraveshouldnothavehadsexualintercoursewiththeirwivesthenightbefore.AccordingtotheteachingsoftheProphetMuhammad(PBUH).AnasIbnMalikrelatedthat:"DuringtheburialofthedaughterofProphetMuhammad(PBUH),ProphetMuhammad(PBUH)wassitting,tearscomingoutfromeyes,heaskedus:"Whodidnothavesexualintercoursewithhiswifelastnight?"AbuTalhaanswered:"I,ProphetMuhammad",thenProphetMuhammad(PBUH)saidtohim:"Yougetdowninthegraveandlayherdown"(Bukhari).Theyshouldundothetieontheheadandthefeet.Theyshouldputabovethebodyalayerofwoodorother,sothatearthwillnotbeputdirectlyonthebodywhentheyfillthegravewithearth.Afterthebodyistotallycovered,itisdesirabletothrowthreehandfulsofsoilintothegrave.Thenthegraveshouldbefilledupwithsand.Itispermissibletoplaceastoneorsomeothertoidentifythegrave.ItisalsoSunnahtomakethegraveconvexfromsand,accordingtotheHadiththatwasreportedbySofyanwhosaid:"ThatIsawthegraveofProphetMuhammad(PBUH)ismadeconvex"(Bukhari),convexoutofsand.JustaftertheburialallMuslims,includingthedeceased’srelatives,maystayinthecemeteryforawhileandmakedua(supplicate)forthedeceased,sinceheisbeingquestionedbytheAngels.ProphetMuhammad(PBUH)inanauthenticHadithsaid: "Makedua’ofIstighfar(supplicateforforgiveness)foryourbrotherandrequeststeadfastnessforhimbecauseheisnowbeingquestioned"(Authentic-AbuDawood).IMPORTANTRULESINTHECEMETERYItisimportanttoobserveworkplacehealthandsafetyrulesbothforthefamily,friendsandfuneraldirectors.Itisprohibitedtostepover,lean,orsitonanygrave.Itisprohibitedtobuildanyformofconstructiononthegrave,ordecoratethegrave.Fromtheauthentictraditions,itisclearthattoerectdomesovergravesorbuildmausoleumsorMosquesongravesisstrictlyforbidden.ProphetMuhammad(PBUH)said:"DonotbuildMosquesinthegraveyard"(Muslim).Itisprohibitedtoplasterthegrave,whitewashthegrave,orusecookedstones.Itisprohibitedtoprayfacingtowardsthegraves.AbuMartadal-GhanawireportedthatProphetMuhammad(PBUH)said:"Donotprayfacingtowardsthegraves"(Muslim).Womenaregenerallydiscouragedfromattendingtheburial.ThisisaccordingtotheauthenticHadithofUm-Atiyahwhoreportedthatwewereforbiddentoaccompanyfuneralprocessions.(Bukhari&Muslim).ItisprohibitedtocrematethebodyofdeadMuslim,evenifthedeceasedrequesteditbeforehisdeath.PerformingautopsyonadeadMuslimistotallyprohibited,unlessitisrequestedbycourtorderorformedico-legalreasons.Thetypesofgravesvarydependingonthesoiltype.Thereare4basictypesandMFSusestheforthoption. Fig2.GraveShapes-4thoptionusedbyMFS SPECIALCASES:1) MiscarriedFetus:ThegeneralprincipleregardingstillbornsifisthefetuswasdeadintheuterusorwasnotaliveatthetimeofbirththenthereisnoghuslorsalatulJanazah.Otheropinions:Ifthefetusislessthanfourmonthsold(Motherwaspregnantforlessthanfourmonths),thenthefetusmaynotbewashed;thefetusshouldbewrappedinapieceofwhiteclothandburied.ThenthereisnoSalatulJanazahforthisfetus.Ifthefetusismorethanfourmonthsold(Motherwaspregnantformorethanfourmonths),thenthefetusmaybewashed,shrouded(Usingoneortwowindingsheetstocoverthewholebody),andthenMuslimshavethechoicewhethertoperformSalatulJanazahornot.2) Children:A)Beforereachingtheageofpuberty,achildmaybewashedbymalesorfemales.Shroudingachildforfemalesuseashirtandtwowindingsheetsandformalestwoorthreewindingsheetsmaybeused.B)Forthosechildrenwhoreachedtheageofpuberty,theyshouldbedealtwithasanadult{Femalechildlikefemaleadult,andmalechildlikemaleadult},butthenSalatulJanazahbeperformed.3) Martyr:ThebodyofaMartyrshouldnotbewashed,norbeshroudedbutburiedwiththesameclothesthatpeoplefoundhimwith.ThestrongestopinionofMuslimscholarsisnottoofferSalatulJanazahformartyrssinceProphetMuhammad(P.B.U.H)didnotofferitforthemartyrsofthebattleofUhud. THEEDDA(WAITINGPERIOD)OFMUSLIMWIDOWS(FEMALES)Eddaisprescribedforwidowsinordertomournthedeathoftheirhusbands,observetheirmemory,fulfillanyobligationstowardthem,andtoseeifthewidowispregnantornot.UmAtiyyahreportedthattheMessengerofAllahsaid:"Awomanshouldnotmournforanydeceasedpersonformorethanthreedays,exceptinthecaseofherhusband’sdeath,whichshemaymournforaperiodoffourmonthsandtendays.Suchawomaninmourningisnottowearanyfancy,brightclothes,butonlyplainclothes,notuseanyadornmentormake-up,noruseperfume,nordieherhandsorfeetwithHenna"(Bukhari&Muslim).Ifthewidowispregnant,thenherwaitingperiodendswhenshedeliversherbaby,accordingtoAllah’scommandintheQuran:"Andforthosewhoarepregnant,theirEddaisuntiltheydeliver"(Quran65:4).DURATIONOFEDDAPREGNANT-UntilDeliveryNOTPREGNANT- FourMonthsandTenDaysSoawidowduringtheEddashould:Liveandsleep inherhome,andonlyleavewhenitisnecessarySheshouldnotwearfancybrightclothes,notwearjewelry,notusemakeupincludingeyeliners(kohl),notuseperfume.Thisisnotatimetodepriveherselffromlawfulthingsortosuffer unduly.Itisatimetorememberthememoriesofherhusband,makeDuaforhim,thinkaboutherselfandplanforthefuture.  SomeinformationandImagesarecourtesyof"TheMuslimShroud"andsimilarpublications.
