Baseballisoneofthecountry'smostpopularspectatorsports.ItiscommonlyconsideredthenationalsportinTaiwan.[2]BaseballwasfirstintroducedduringJapaneserule.[1][2]
Taiwanalreadyhaditsfirstbaseballteamin1906,duringtheperiodofJapaneserule.
OnlytheJapaneseplayedbaseballinitially,butgraduallymoreandmoreTaiwaneseplayersjoined.
In1931,theKagiAgriculturalandForestrySchool(nowNationalChiayiUniversity)baseballteamwonsecondplaceinthe17thJapaneseHighSchoolBaseballChampionship(SummerKoshien),whichshockedthewholeofJapan.
Sincethen,anumberofTaiwanesebaseballplayershavejoinedJapaneseprofessionalbaseballteams.Anotableexampleis,ShoseiGo(WúChāngzhēng),nicknamed"TheHumanLocomotive",whosemasteryofbothpitchingandbattingwonhimelectiontotheJapaneseBaseballHallofFamein1995afterhisretirement.
AfterWorldWarIIin1945,baseballremainedpopularinTaiwan.In1968,RedLeavesfromtheremotemountainousareainTaitungCountydefeatedthevisitingall-starlittle-leagueteamfromJapan,touchingoffa"little-leaguebaseballcraze"inTaiwan.Thefollowingyear,GoldenDragonlittle-leaguebaseballteam [zh],anall-starteam,participatedinLittleLeagueWorldSeriesforthefirsttimeandwonthechampionship,whichlaunchedthe"goldenage"ofTaiwan's"threeyouthlevelbaseball [zh]"programcomprisingthelittleleague,seniorleague,andbigleague.[3]Withregardtolittleleaguebaseball,Taiwanhaswon15championshipsfrom1969to1991.Forseniorleaguebaseball,TaiwanjoinedinSeniorLeagueWorldSeriesheldbyLittleLeagueBaseballatGary,Indianain1972,andwonthechampionshipinthatinauguraleffort.Within20years,Taiwanhaswon17championshipsasof1991.Forbigleaguebaseball,TaiwanbeganenteringtheBigLeagueWorldSeriesheldbyLittleLeagueBaseballatFortLauderdale,Floridain1974,andwon13championshipswithin18years(until1991).
TheprofessionalbaseballleagueistheChineseProfessionalBaseballLeague(CPBL),andthemainplayoffcompetitionistheTaiwanSeries.Taiwanhasbeen"exporting"baseballtalentstoJapanandUnitedStatesoverthepastfewdecades,suchasTai-YuanKuo(TaigenKaku)totheSeibuLions,Chien-MingWangtotheNewYorkYankees/WashingtonNationals,andWei-YinChentotheBaltimoreOrioles.TheChineseTaipeinationalbaseballteamandtheChineseTaipeiwomen'snationalbaseballteamarecurrentlysecondbestintheworld.[4]

BasketballisthemostpopularballsportinTaiwanbyparticipation.Themen'sbasketballleaguesincludetheP.League+(PLG)andT1Leagueforprofessionalbasketball,andtheSuperBasketballLeague(SBL)forsemi-professionalleague.TheWomen'sSuperBasketballLeague(WSBL)isasemi-professionalwomen'sleague.TheChineseTaipeimen'snationalbasketballteamwonthesilvermedalattheAsianChampionshipin1960and1963andbronzein1973and1989.TheChineseTaipeiwomen'snationalbasketballteamwonthesilvermedalatthe1972AsianBasketballChampionshipforWomen.Theteamwonbronzeattheeventin1965,1968,1970,1974,1986,1988,1999and2005.Further,thewomen'steamwonsilveratthe2006AsianGames.

DuetoJapanese(longbeforetheJ.LeaguemadefootballpopularinJapan)andAmericaninfluence,footballhasnotbeenaspopularasbaseballorbasketballinTaiwan,althoughithasahistoryofsuccessattheAsianlevel.FootballisrunbytheChineseTaipeiFootballAssociation(CTFA),whichinturnrunsthenationalteamsformenandwomenandseveraldomesticcompetitions.[6]
Thetopleagueoffootball,theTaiwanFootballPremierLeague(formerIntercityFootballLeague),isrelativelysemi-professionalanddominatedbytwoteams,TatungF.C.fromTaipeiandTaipowerF.C.fromKaohsiung.Asanincentive,theAsianFootballConfederationrunstheAFCPresident'sCupcontinentalclubcompetitionforcountrieswherefootballisrelativelyundeveloped,andthesetwoclubsoftentaketurnsrepresentingTaiwaninit.[citationneeded]

Startingfrom2004,theChineseTaipeiVolleyballAssociationhoststheEnterpriseVolleyballLeagueeveryyear.Itisamen'samateurvolleyballleague.Intotal4teamsparticipatedinthe2008seasonheChineseTaipeiwomen'snationalvolleyballteamisthewomen'snationalvolleyballteamofRepublicofChina(Taiwan).(SeeChineseTaipeiforteamnamingissue)ControlledbyChineseTaipeiVolleyballAssociation,itrepresentsthecountryininternationalcompetitionsandfriendlymatchesfter16yearssince1990,ChineseTaipeiwomen'snationalvolleyballteamre-enteredFIVBWomen'sWorldChampionshipin2006.Toeveryone'ssurprise,the23-rankedteamgainedtheirfirst-evervictoryoverthehostJapan(7th)ontheopeningday,followedbydefeatedSouthKorea(8th),Poland(9th),Kenya(11th),andCostaRica(33rd)inthefirstround.However,afteragoodstartoffiveconsecutivevictories,theteamcouldnotcontinuetheirimpressingformandeventuallytookthe12thplaceInDecember,thesamesquadattendedthe2006AsianGamesheldinDoha,Qatar.AlthoughtheteamlosttoSouthKoreaandChinainthepreliminaryround,theylaterbeatKazakhstanandThailandandwonthebronzemedal,thefirstevermedalinwomen'svolleyballatAsianGames.[2]

Overtheyears,badmintonhasalsostartedgainingpopularitywiththegeneralpublic.TheriseofTaiwanesebadmintonplayerssuchasworldNo.1TaiTzu-ying,ChouTien-chen,andWangTzu-weiintheBWFworldrankingshelpedspurinterestinthesportandcontributedtothesurgeinpopularity.
Sincebadmintondoesnotrequireveryexpensiveequipmentandisrelativelysimpletoplay,manyTaiwanesealsoenjoyplayingbadmintonasarecreationalsportorasanextra-curricularactivity.
