ESDMisanapproachforworkingwithveryyoungchildrenwithASDthatfosterchildren’sspontaneoustendencytoapproachandinteractwithothersandtheirabilitytoengagewithothers.TheESDMseekstoempowerchildrenwithASDtobecomeactiveparticipantsintheworld,initiatinginteractionswithotherpeople,whichisthehallmarkofautism.Thisisarelationship-basedintervention,andinvolvestheparentsandfamiliesparticipation.Inparticularthisinterventionfocusesonboostingchildren’ssocial-emotional,cognitive,andlanguageabilities,asdevelopmentinthesedomainsisparticularlyaffectedbyautism. TheworkshopwasdeliveredbyESDMprofessionalsMichaelaJelenandJanetHarder,whorepresenttheESDMCanada.ESDMCanadaisoneoftheleadingorganizationsinthefield. Theworkshopwasattendedby11professionals,whohavealreadyparticipatedinESDMintroductorytrainingwiththesupportofCaritasCzechRepublic. Thetrainingwascoveredinsix3-hoursessionsonZOOM.Inbetweenthesessionsparticipantswereencouragedtoworkwithchildrentoreceivethefeedbackfromthetrainersregardingtheirwork. Thecomponentsofthemodelthatwerecoveredanddemonstratedbyallparticipantsincluded: 1.AssessmentofchildskillsusingtheESDMCurriculumChecklist;2.Interventionplanningandgoalsetting;3.Engaginginplay-basedframesforteaching,calledJointActivityRoutinesorJARs;4.UsingtheESDMTeachingFidelityRatingSystem;5.Capturingdataduringtherapy. TheworkshopwillhelpdiversifyapproachesofworkingwithchildrenwithAutismSpectrumDisordersinGeorgia,expandtheknowledgeoffieldprofessionalsaboutmodernapproachesandinvolvethemincontinuingeducation,whichwillhaveapositiveimpactoninterventionresultsforchildrenwithASDandtheirfamilies.
