Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) training is offered to clinical psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows at the Duke Center for Autism. TheEarlyStartDenverModel(ESDM)isacomprehensive,naturalisticdevelopmentalbehavioralearlyinterventionapproachdesignedbyDrs.SallyRogersandGeraldineDawsonforchildrenages12to60monthswhoarediagnosedwithormayhaveautismspectrumdisorder(ASD).Themodelusestheknowledgeofhowtypicalchildrendevelopandlearnandthewaysinwhichautismaffectsearlydevelopmentinordertoimprovedevelopmentaloutcomesforautisticchildren. ThegoalsofESDMaretopromotelanguage,socialinteraction,andlearningandtoacceleratechildren’sdevelopmentalratesinmultipledomains,includingcognitive,social-emotional,adaptive,andlanguageskills.ESDMisamanualizedinterventionandiscomprisedofacurriculum,asetofteachingpracticesthatarebasedonnaturalisticdevelopmentalappliedbehavioranalysisprinciples,andafidelitymeasure. ESDMisoneoftwoearlyinterventionmethodsthatareconsideredbytheAgencyforHealthcareResearchandQualitytobeefficaciousinterventionmethods.EfficacywasinitiallyestablishedinanNIH-fundedrandomizedclinicaltrialwithautistictoddlers,whichdemonstratedthatESDMresultedinsignificantlyimprovedcognitive,language,adaptivebehavior,andsocialoutcomes,aswellasnormalizedbrainresponsestosocialstimuli.SeveraladditionalstudieshavedemonstratedtheefficacyandeffectivenessofESDMacrossavarietyofformats,includingintensivedelivery,parentcoaching,andpreschool/daycaredelivery.
