Myproblem,asIhavesincediscoveredisthatIwastoobusythinkingaboutmyliteraturereviewandundertakingallmyreadingunderthemisguidednotionthatmethodologywassomethingtobelookedatlateron.HowwrongIwas! HavingreadCloughandNutbrownInowacknowledgethatmethodsandmethodologyshouldberightupthereintermsofpriorityasastartingpointforanyPhDresearchproject.Understandingthedifferencebetweenmethodsandmethodologyisofparamountimportance. Methodissimplyaresearchtool,acomponentofresearch–sayforexample,aqualitativemethodsuchasinterviews.Methodologyisthejustificationforusingaparticularresearchmethod. Soifforexample,likeme,youwanttounderstandthemotivationsandperceptionsofagroupofbloggersthenyouwouldmostlikelychooseaqualitative,methodasopposedtoaquantitativeone. ButasCloughandNutbrownexplaintheirbook,decisionssuchaswhethertointerview,howmanyparticipantstointerviewandsoon,“areoftenbasedonvaluesandassumptionswhichinfluencethestudy,andassuchthereforeneedtobefullyinterrogatedinordertoclarifytheresearchdecisionswhicharemade.” HavingaclearideaonthemethodsandmethodologyforaPhDthesiscanmakethejobofreviewingliteraturemuchmorestraightforwardasyoucanmorepreciselytargetstudiesinyourchosentopicareaandcritiquethewholeapproachtosimilarstudies,includingthemethodsused.
