Inaddition,astudyintheUnitedStatesfoundthathavingagoodbalanceofsleep,work,timewithfamilyandfriends,and“metime”isconnectedtobeinglesslonely(Cigna,2018).Yetbalancingsleep,work,asociallife,andpersonaltimeismoredifficultforpeopleinpoverty(Adler&Newman,2002).Andsolonelinessmaybothresultfrombeinginpovertyandmakeithardertogetoutofpoverty. HEADSUP ResearchershaveusedtheUCLALonelinessScaleinlargesurveystudiesthatincludepeopleinpoverty.Butwithoutcarefulexperiments,researcherscannottellforsurewhetherpovertycausesloneliness,lonelinesscausespoverty,orsomethirdforce(suchasaphysicaldisability)causesboth.Nevertheless,high-qualitystudiessuggestthatallthesecausalrelationshipsarelikelyatplay.
