Skiptomaincontent Advertisement SearchallBMCarticles Search ReliabilityandvalidityofJapaneseversionsoftheUCLAlonelinessscaleversion3foruseamongmotherswithinfantsandtoddlers:across-sectionalstudy DownloadPDF DownloadPDF Researcharticle OpenAccess Published:26July2019 ReliabilityandvalidityofJapaneseversionsoftheUCLAlonelinessscaleversion3foruseamongmotherswithinfantsandtoddlers:across-sectionalstudy AzusaArimoto ORCID:orcid.org/0000-0002-8950-674X1&EtsukoTadaka1 BMCWomen'sHealth volume 19,Article number: 105(2019) Citethisarticle 5860Accesses 20Citations 15Altmetric Metricsdetails AbstractBackgroundMotherswithinfantsandtoddlersareapotentialtargetpopulationforthepreventionoralleviationoffeelingsofloneliness.However,thetheoryandmethodsformeasuringlonelinessamongmotherswithinfantsandtoddlershaveyettobestandardizedworldwide,includinginJapan.OurgoalwastoevaluatethereliabilityandvalidityoftheJapaneseversionoftheUCLALonelinessScaleVersion3(UCLA-LS3-J),aswellastwoshort-formversions—the10-itemUCLA-LS3(SF-10)andthe3-itemUCLA-LS3(SF-3)—forthemeasurementoflonelinessinmotherswithinfantsandtoddlersinJapan.MethodsThiscross-sectionalstudywasconductedusingaself-reportquestionnaire.Thetargetpopulationwas430motherswithinfantsandtoddlerswhovisitedacommunityhealthcenterinYokohamaCityinJapan.QuestionnaireitemsencompassedtheUCLA-LS3-J,aswellasdemographicdata,thefeelingforchildrearingscale,andmeasuresofsocialnetworksandsubjectivehealthstatus.ThereliabilityandvalidityoftheUCLA-LS3-Janditstwoshort-formversions(SF-3andSF-10)weredeterminedviaIBMSPSSAmosandSPSSStatistics22.ResultsQuestionnaireswerereturnedby248mothers(validresponserate:57.7%)aged32.7 ± 4.6(mean ± SD)years.ThemeanscoreontheUCLA-LS3-Jwas38.4 ± 9.7(range20.0–73.0),withanormaldistribution.Whenconfirmatoryfactoranalysiswascarriedout(forasinglefactormodel),thegoodnessoffitofthemodelwasalmostidenticaltothatoftheoriginalUCLA-LS3versionfortheUCLA-LS3-J:(GFI = 0.882,AGFI = 0.840,CFI = 0.932,RMSEA = 0.066)andSF-10:(GFI = 0.942,AGFI = 0.900,CFI = 0.956,RMSEA = 0.081).TheSF-3modelalsoshowedanacceptablefit.TheUCLA-LS3-JtotalscorewassignificantlycorrelatedwiththetotalscoreontheSF-10(r = 0.965)andSF-3(r = 0.868).TheCronbach’sαcoefficientoftheUCLA-LS3-Jwas0.926,whilethoseoftheSF-10andSF-3were0.888and0.790,respectively.ThescoreontheUCLA-LS3-Jwaspositivelycorrelatedwithchildcareburden(r = .319,p
