Tomakethisalittleclearer,iftheresultsfromTestAplottedalongthex-axisofagraphclusteredcloselytoresultsfromTestB,plottedalongthey-axisasthefirstgraphshows,aresearchercouldsaythattherewasastrongcorrelationbetweenthetwosetsofresults.Anotherwayoflookingatthatrelationshipistosaythatwhenthereisastrongcorrelationbetweentwotests,youwouldexpectthatalmosteverybodywhohadahighscoreonTestAalsohadahighscoreonTestB,andviceversa.IftheresultsfromTestAwereweaklycorrelatedtotheresultsfromTestB,theresearcherwouldseeagraphlikethemiddleimage.Withthatkindofgraph,youmightfindthatmoreofyourparticipantswhogotahighscoreonTestAalsogotahighscoreonTestB,butnotthatmanymore.Finally,ifTestAresultsandTestBresultshadnocorrelationtooneanotherwhatsoever,plottingthemonthegraphwouldyieldsomethinglikethethirdimage,inwhichthetestresultsareallovertheplaceanddon'tclustertogetheratall.Inthatcase,youwouldn'tbeabletomakeanypredictionaboutwhatthescoreswouldbeonTestBjustbylookingatthescoresonTestA.ThegeniusofPearson'sCorrelationtestwasthatitallowedresearcherstolistthetwosetsofresultsandthenuseastatisticalformulatodeterminethelevelofcorrelationbetweentheresultswithouthavingtositdownandploteachindividualtestresultonagraph.
