TheEarlyStartDenverModel:OutcomesandModeratorsofanInterventionforToddlerswithAutism View/Open Sullivan_washington_0250E_12253.pdf(1.127Mb) Date2013-11-14 Author Sullivan,KatherineAnne Metadata Showfullitemrecord Abstract Effectivetreatmentforyoungchildrenwithautismspectrumdisorder(ASD)requiresidentificationanddevelopmentofeffectivetreatmentsthataddresstheuniqueneedsoftoddlerswithASDasyoungas18monthsold.ThecurrentstudyaimstoexpandthecurrentstateoftheresearchontheEarlyStartDenverModel(ESDM)asaneffectiveinterventionfortoddlerswithASDbyexaminingbothtreatmentoutcomesaswellasmoderatorsofthoseoutcomes.Threetreatmentoutcomeswereexamined,eachrelatingcloselytotheconceptualizationandgoalsoftheESDMandhighlightingtheanticipatedrelationshipbetweengeneralareasofdevelopmentandspecificbehaviors:1)sharedpositiveaffect,2)gestureuse,and3)receptiveandexpressivelanguage).Moderatorsincludedinitiallevelsofparticipant'ssocialorientingskills,responsetojointattention,andobjectuse.Thecurrentstudyisarandomized,controlledtrialthatincludedforty-eightchildrendiagnosedwithASDbetween18and30monthsofagewhowererandomlyassignedtooneoftwogroups:ESDMorreferraltocommunityprovidersforinterventioncommonlyavailableinthecommunity.ResultsincludedmaineffectsofESDMtreatmentforcommunicationoutcomes,specificallyreceptivelanguage(after1and2yearsofintervention)andexpressivelanguage(after2yearsofintervention).Additionally,significantmoderationoftreatmenteffectswasnoted,particularlyresponsetojointattentionandobjectusemoderatinglanguageoutcomesandbothhighandlowinitiallevelsofobjectusemoderatingseveralchildoutcomes.ContinuedfocusonwhichchildrenwithASDandtheirfamiliesbenefitfromESDMinterventionaswellasidentificationofcrucialtreatmentcomponentswillbecriticalforthedisseminationanddeliveryoftheESDMbeyondtheresearchsettingtothecommunityatlarge.
