EarlierPACEfindingssharedfactorsthatpromotedorstoodinthewayofearlyinterventionproviders’abilitytocoachparentsintheESDMinordertobetterunderstandhowearlyinterventionmodelscanbecomeroutinepracticeforhealthsystemstoofferfamilies.NowtheprojectturnstohowparentsandchildrenfavoredfromprovidercoachingintheESDMcomparedtootherfamilieswhoreceivedcommunityservicesthatactuallyaveragedmorehoursofone-to-onesupports. Inbothgroups,parents’abilitytojoin,sustain,andbuildontheirchild’splayrelatedstronglytohowengagedandconnectedtheirchildrespondedtothem.However,parentscoachedintheESDMreportedmorewordsunderstoodbytheirchild,aswellashighersatisfactionandself-efficacyintheirparentingabilities. Whenit’snotidealweatheroryoujustcan’tgetoutside,itcanbehardtokeepthinkingofthingstodowithayoungchildwho’sraringtogoallthetimebuthasn’tgottheconcentrationtostickwithoneactivityforverylong. Belowaresomedifferentactivities-physical,sensory,arty,crafty,surprising,messy,orjustplainsilly- tochoosefromthroughouttheday,dependingoneachchild’smoodandenergylevels.Pay attentiontowhatchildrenlike(orseemcuriousabout)andfollowtheirleadaslongasyouareapartoftheaction,too.Remember,themostimportantthingisforchildrentohavefundoingthiswithyou! 1.FollowtheLeader- Thechildcopieseverythingyoudo:touchingtoes,jumping,crawling,pattingyourtummy,puttingyourslippersonyourhead–thesillierthebetter!Thenit’sthechild’sturntolead... 2. RescuetheAnimals- Gatherupsometoyanimals(orothersmallobjectslikecars,pegs,oractionherofigurines)andarollofmaskingtape.Usestripsofmaskingtapetostickthetoyanimals,onebyone,toawindoworadoor.Thenencouragethechildto‘rescue’thetoysbycarefullypeeling/pullingoffthetape.Thechildmayalsoenjoyre-stickingtheanimalsbackonthewindowforyoutorescueforroundtwo!It’safungamefortoddlersthat’sreallygoodfordevelopingfine-motorskillsandhand-eyeco-ordination. 3.HuntforBuriedTreasure- You’llneedsomesmalltoystoburyindriedbeans,rice,orsandforthisone(clickhereto makesuper-quickplaysandwithjusttwoingredients-flourandoil).Putthedriedbeans,rice,orsandinabinorbowlandhidethetoysinit.Givethechildmaterialsto‘huntfortreasures’likeaspoon,fork,rake,cup,andsieve.(hint:putamat/sheetonthefloorunderthebowltocatchanystrayshoveledgrains.) 4. PlayParcelSurprise- Usenewspaper,constructionpaper,oranytypeofpapertowrapupafewofthechild’sfavoritetoys(don’tusetoomuchstickytape).Opaquebagsworktoo.Thengiveoneparcelatatimetothechildandaskthemtoguesswhat’sinside–isitTeddy?OrDolly?OrPanda?Thenletthechildunwrapthetoy(OK,tearoffthepaper)andenjoythesurpriseoffindingout. 5. MagicalPainting- Drawasimpledesignonpaperwithawhitecandleorcrayon.Makeupwaterypaintinastrongcolorforthechildtopaintthepaper.Astheypaintthepaper,itwillrevealthe‘magic’hiddendesign. 6. HunttheTeddy- HideTeddy(oranotherfavoritetoy)somewhereintheroom(whereyourchildcanreachit)andgolookingforTeddytogether.PerhapsTeddywill‘magically’squeakwhenyougetnear(howareyourventriloquismskills?).OldertoddlersmightenjoyhidingTeddyforyoutofind,too.
