HelpingYourChildGrow Normalgrowth—supportedbygoodnutrition,enoughsleep,andregularexercise—isoneofthebestoverallindicatorsofachild'sgoodhealth. Yourchild'sgrowthpatternislargelydeterminedbygenetics.Pushingkidstoeatextrafoodorgethigheramountsofvitamins,minerals,orothernutrientswillnotincreasetheirheightandmayleadtoweightproblems. Acceptingkidsastheyarehelpsthembuildself-acceptance. Puberty Puberty—orsexualdevelopment—isatimeofdramaticchangeforbothboysandgirls.Theageatwhichthephysicalchangesofpubertynormallybeginvarieswidely. Forbothsexes,thesehormone-drivenchangesareaccompaniedbygrowthspurtsthattransformchildrenintophysicallymatureteensastheirbodiesdevelop. Breastdevelopment,usuallythefirstnoticeablesignofpubertyingirls,maybeginanytimebetweenages8and13.Eventsingirlsastheygothroughpuberty: Breastsbegintodevelopandhipsbecomerounded. Theincreaseintherateofgrowthinheightbegins. Pubichairbeginstoappear,usually6–12monthsafterthestartofbreastdevelopment.About15%ofgirlswilldeveloppubichairbeforebreastdevelopmentstarts. Theuterusandvagina,aswellaslabiaandclitoris,increaseinsize. Pubichairiswellestablishedandbreastsgrowfurther. Therateofgrowthinheightreachesitspeakbyabout2yearsafterpubertybegan(averageageis12years). Menstruationbegins,almostalwaysafterthepeakgrowthrateinheighthasbeenreached(averageageis12.5years). Oncegirlsgettheirperiods,theyusuallygrowabout1or2moreinches(2.5to5centimeters),reachingtheirfinaladultheightbyaboutage14or15years(youngerorolderdependingonwhenpubertybegan). Mostboysshowthefirstphysicalchangesofpubertybetweenages10and16,andtendtogrowmostquicklybetweenages12and15.Thegrowthspurtofboysis,onaverage,about2yearslaterthanthatofgirls.Byage16,mostboyshavestoppedgrowing,buttheirmuscleswillcontinuetodevelop. Otherfeaturesofpubertyinboysinclude: Thepenisandtesticlesincreaseinsize. Pubichairappears,followedbyunderarmandfacialhair. Thevoicedeepensandmaysometimescrackorbreak. TheAdam'sapple,orlarynxcartilage,getsbigger. Testiclesbegintoproducesperm. AttheDoctor'sOffice Despitedatacollectedforgrowthcharts,"normal"heightsandweightsaredifficulttodefine.Shorterparents,forinstance,tendtohaveshorterkids,whereastallerparentstendtohavetallerkids. Youmayworryifyourchildisn'tastallasotherkidsthatage.Butthemoreimportantquestioniswhetheryourchildiscontinuingtogrowatanormalrate.Ifyourdoctorfindsaproblem—suchasagrowthratethathadbeennormalbuthasrecentlyslowed—heorshemaytrackgrowthcarefullyoverseveralmonthstoseeifthepatternsuggestsapossiblehealthproblemorisjustavariationofnormal. Ifit'sfoundthatyourchildisgrowingordevelopingtooslowly,thedoctormayorderteststocheckformedicalconditionssuchashypothyroidism,growthhormonedeficiency,orotherthingsthatcanaffectgrowth.
