FacebookTwitterEmailLinkedinDuringMEPC75inNovember2020,theIMOapprovedamendmentstoMARPOLAnnexVI,introducinganEnergyEfficiencyDesignIndexforexistingships(EEXI).SubjecttoadoptionatMEPC76inJune2021,therequirementswillenterintoforcein2023.DNVGLanalyzedthepresentandfutureofEEXIinarecentwebinar.IntroductionoftheEnergyEfficiencyExistingShipIndex(EEXI)TheEEXIwillbeapplicableforallvesselsabove400GTfallingunderMARPOLAnnexVI.Guidelinesoncalculations,surveysandverificationoftheEEXIwillfollowandbefinalizedatMEPC76.However,astheEEXIistheextensionforexistingshipsofthenewbuildingrelatedEEDI,mostprocedureswillbethesameasfortheEEDI,withsomeadaptationsregardinglimitedaccesstodesigndata,saysDNVGL.RelatedNews GETTHESAFETY4SEAINYOURINBOX!Name:TheaimoftheEnergyEfficiencyExistingShipIndex(EEXI)istomeasureships’energyefficiency.However,differentmeasurementsapplyfordifferentkindsofships.BulkcarriersForbulkcarriersover200,000DWTthereductionfactoris15,whichincreasesto20forshipsunder200,000DWT.Inaddition,correctionswillbemadefortheCommonStructureRules,andaminimumpropulsionpowerrequirementwillbesetforoperationinadverseweatherconditions.BulkerswillalsohavethestrictestrequiredEEXIcurveofallshiptypes.Credit:DNVGLTankersFortankersover200,000DWTthereductionfactorwillbethesameasbulkers’,namely15.Moreover,tankersunder200,000DWTwillhaveareductionfactorof20.Additionally,correctionsarealsoexpectedforCommonStructureRules,aswellasaminimumpropulsionpowerrequirementforoperationinadverseweatherconditions.Thedifferencewithbulkersisthatapartlyshaftmotororshaftgeneratorwillbefurtherconsidered.Credit:DNVGLContainershipsTheEEXIrequirementsforcontainershipscorrespondto70%oftheDWT.However,thechallengeistodeterminethereferencespeed,aswellasthepartlyshaftgenerator.Thereductionfactorisalsomuchhigher,asforshipsover200,000DWTthefactoris50,muchhigherthanbulkersandtankers,andreducesastheDWTfalls.GeneralcargoshipsRegardinggeneralcargoships,thereisalargevariationaroundreferenceline,astherearedifferentdesignswithdifferentpurposes.Moreover,thecorrectionfactordependsontheship’sdimensionsandspeed,whileitwillalsoconsidercranes.Partlyshaftgeneratorwillalsobetakenintoconsideration.Fortheseshipsthehighestreductionfactorwillbe30,forshipsover15,000DWT.Credit:DNVGLGascarriersAsforallothershiptypesacorrectionforice-classedshipswillbeconsidered,aswellascorrectionforpowerandcapacity.Anadditionalcorrectionfactorwillbeconsideredforice-classedshipshavingIASuperandIAgivinganother5%improvement.Herethehighestreductionfactoristhesameaswiththegeneralcargoships,namely30forshipsover15,000DWT.LNGcarriersLNGcarrierswerepreviouslyconsideredasgascarriers,withthesamereductionfactors.However,thishasnowchanged.Specifically,theEEXIrequirementsforLNGcarriersarenowconsideringboil-offgas,aswellastheadditionalauxiliarypowerneededforreliquefactionsystem.LNGcarriershaveonlyonereductionfactor,whichis30forshipsover10,000DWT.Ro-RopassengershipsThecorrectionfactorforpassengershipswilldependontheship’sdimensionsanditsspeed.However,thisfactorcouldpreventimprovementbylimitingtheenginepower.Whatismore,twoveryimportantfactorthatwillaffectthereductionfactorforpassengerships,aretheircubiccapacity,andtheadditionalhotelload.Nevertheless,theseshipshaveamongthelowestreductionfactors,asashipthatisover1,000DWT,willhaveareductionfactorof5.Credit:DNVGLCruiseshipsTherequirementsofEEXIforcruiseshipsaresimilartoro-ropassengerships.Specifically,theefficiencyofthegeneratorsandelectricmotorswillbeconsidered,aswellastheadditionalhotelload.However,thereductionfactorismuchhigherthatro-ropassengerships,withshipsover85,000havinga30-reductionfactor.Takingallthesefactorsintoconsideration,DNVGLrecommendedthatifashipdoesnotcomplywithrequiredEEXI,itshould:ConsiderenginepowerlimitationIfspeeddropwithlimitedpowernotacceptableCheckenergyefficiencytechnologiesNevertheless,ithighlightedthatfromregulatorysidethereisanurgentneedtoreviewtheconsiderationofenergyefficiencytechnologies,whichisplannedtostartinsummer2021.Credit:DNVGLComplyingwithEEXIInordertocomplywiththeEEXI,shipsmustatfirstcollectallthedocumentationneeded:NOxTechnicalFilesofA/EandM/ELightweightCertificateorIncliningTestReportTrim&StabilityBookletModelTestReportSpeedtestfromSeaTrialReportEEDITechnicalFile(ifavailable)Thentheyshouldanalyzepotentialmeasures.InordertodecidehowtoachievetheEEXItargetbasedonpreviousEEXIcalculation,DNVGLsuggestsoperatorstoconsiderthefollowing:PropulsionoptimizationsEngineoptimizationsEnergyefficiencytechnologiesEnginePowerLimitation(EPL)TimeofinstallationCostandpaybacktimeofimprovementoptionVesselageSpeedLossThenextstepisinstallingthepotentialmeasures.Todothat,operatorsmustcontacttheenginemanufacturer,whowillcalculatenewSFoCandprovideanEPLreport.AfterthatanEPLmanagementplanwillbecreated,andthedateforinstallationneedswillbefixed.Thelaststepisinvitingtheclassforsurvey.Aftertheinstallation,thenextstepistheFinalEEXITechnicalFile,whichwillcontain:EEXIcalculationaccordingtocalculationguidelineEEXITechnicalfileaccordingtoEEXIcalculationguidelineAlldocumentationfromimprovementmeasureAftertheFinalEEXITechnicalFileissubmittedandapproved,anonboardsurveywilltakeplaceandanewIEECwillbeissued.Tags:DNVMEPC75reducingshippingemissionsregulatoryupdatesm
