Social/Economicrisks Social/Economicrisksincludealterationsinrelationshipswithothersthataretothedisadvantageofthesubject,includingembarrassment,lossofrespectofothers,labelingasubjectinawaythatwillhavenegativeconsequences,orinsomewaydiminishingthoseopportunitiesandpowersapersonhasbyvirtueofrelationshipswithothers.Economicrisksincludepaymentbysubjectsforproceduresnototherwiserequired,lossofwagesorotherincomeandanyotherfinancialcosts,suchasdamagetoasubject'semployability,asaconsequenceofparticipationintheresearch. LossofConfidentiality Inallresearchinvolvinghumansubjects,confidentialityofidentifiableinformationispresumedandmustbemaintainedunlesstheinvestigatorobtainstheexpresspermissionofthesubjecttodootherwise.Subjectshavetherightstobeprotectedagainstinjuryorillegalinvasionsoftheirprivacyandtopreservationoftheirpersonaldignity.Themoresensitivetheresearchmaterial,thegreaterthecarethatmustbeexercisedinobtaining,handling,andstoringdata.Inordertominimizetheriskforlossofconfidentiality,investigatorsshouldonlycollectpersonalinformationthatisabsolutelyessentialtotheresearchactivity.Ifpersonaldatamustbecollected,itshouldbecodedasearlyintheactivityaspossibleandsecurelystoredsothatonlytheinvestigatorandauthorizedstaffmayaccessit.Identitiesofindividualsubjectsmustneverbereleasedwithouttheexpressconsentofthesubject.Inaddition,ifaninvestigatorwishestousedataforapurposeotherthantheoneforwhichitwasoriginallycollectedandthedataarestillidentifiable(e.g.acodelistforthedatastillexists),theinvestigatormayneedtoobtainconsentfromthesubjectsforthenewuseofthedata. Legalrisks Legalrisksexistwhentheresearchmethodsaresuchthatthesubjectorotherswillbeliableforaviolationofthelaw,eitherbyrevealingthatthesubjectorothershaveorwillengageinconductforwhichthesubjectorothersmaybecriminallyorcivillyliable,orbyrequiringactivitiesforwhichthesubjectorothersmaybecriminallyorcivillyliable.
