By1951,theinfluxofmissionariesandbusinesspeopleescapingfromthecommunistvictoryinmainlandChinacausedenrollmenttogrowto120students.By1952,TASwasforcedtorelocatetoNong'anEastRoadtoprovidespaceforthegrowingstudentpopulation In1953,theU.S.MilitaryAssistanceAdvisoryGroupwasestablishedinTaiwan.ThisbroughttotheislandalargenumberofU.S.militarypersonnel.Alongwiththesemilitarypersonnelcametheirfamilies,includingchildrenneedinganAmerican-styleeducation.TASbecametheschoolforthechildrenoftheU.S.militarypersonnel.Inthesummerof1953,TASconstructedamuchlargercampusatChang'anEastRoad. In1956,TASgraduateditsfirstclassof14seniors.Bythen,theChang'ancampushadapproximately50facultymembersand1,000students.In1957,Mr.WayneNesbittservedasthefirstsuperintendentoftheschool. In1959,TASpurchaseda22acre(89,000m2)siteinShilinforanewcampus.InMarch1960,thekindergartenandlowerschoolmovedintoa36-classroom5-wingcomplexonthesite.TheupperschoolremainedattheChang'ancampusuntil1964,whenthelastupperschoolfacilitieswerecompleted.By1969,TASenrollmentreacheditshighestpointwithnearly3,000students. Borderedontwosidesbyariver,theShilincampuswaspronetofloodingduringthetyphoonsexperiencedonTaiwanwhentheprotectivedikeswerebreached.Cleanuptookseveraldaysasclassroomsweredriedoutandmudandsiltwasremoved. Inthe1970s,Taiwan'stransformingeconomybroughtforeignbusinessmenandoverseasChineseintothelocaleconomy,settingthestageforTAS'slatertransformationevenasenrollmentshrankdramaticallyduetotheU.S.militarypull-outfromTaiwan.Bythelateseventies,studentenrollmentdroppedtoapproximately700students.Withinafewyears,enrollmentstartedtoincreaseagainasoverseasChinesewithforeignpassportsarrivedinTaiwansearchingforAmericaneducationalfacilitiesfortheirchildren.Bytheearlyeighties,themajorityofstudentswereethnicallyTaiwaneseandalsoU.S.citizens. InSeptember1989,TASrelocatedtoitspresentcampusinTianmu,Taipei.ToobtainuseofthegovernmentlandinTianmu,TASexchangedtitletoitsShihlinpropertyforalong-termleaseontheTianmusiteataconcessionaryrent. Organization[edit] TASisdividedintothreedivisions:lower,middle,andupperschools.Thelowerschool(elementary)includespre-kindergarten(knownasKindergartenA),kindergarten,andgrades1through5.Themiddleschool(juniorhigh)includesgrades6through8.Theupperschool(highschool)includesgrades9through12.Eachdivisionisrunbyaprincipaland1or2assistantprincipals.
