Inhumansandotherorganisms,nearlyeverycellcontainsthesamegenes,butdifferentcellsshowdifferentpatternsofgeneexpression.Thesedifferencesareresponsibleforthemanydifferentpropertiesandbehaviorsofvariouscellsandtissues,bothinhealthanddisease. AnRNAsequencemirrorsthesequenceoftheDNAfromwhichitwastranscribed.Consequently,byanalyzingtheentirecollectionofRNAsequencesinacell(thetranscriptome)researcherscandeterminewhenandwhereeachgeneisturnedonoroffinthecellsandtissuesofanorganism.
