Morethanone-thirdofpaycheck-to-paycheckconsumersintheU.S.earnatleast$250,000,accordingtoanewreportbyloanissuerLendingClubandcommercemediaplatformPYMNTS,suggestingthatinflationisaffectinghowAmericansofallincomelevelshandletheirbudgets. “Inflationwillmostlikelybepartoftheeconomicpictureformanymonthstocome,andconsumerslivingpaychecktopaycheckofallincomebracketswillneedtoreviewtheirfinancialsituationsandplantheirspendingaccordingly,”thereportreads.  Thereportanalyzedthefinancesofover3,000consumersofallincomelevelsacrosstheU.S.ThesurveywasconductedinApril,andreportsonthefinancesofthecountry’shighestincomeearnersforthefirsttimeinthestudy’shistory. “Earningaquarterofamilliondollarsayearismorethanfivetimesthenationalmedianandisclearlyhighincome.Thefactthatathirdofthemarelivingpaychecktopaycheckshouldsurpriseyou,”AnujNayar,LendingClub’sfinancialhealthofficer,saidinastatement.Nayaraddedthattheexpensivelifestylesofhighincomeearnerswerebehindtheiradjustedspendingpatterns. Buttherearebigdifferencesbetweenhowpeopleindifferentincomebracketspaytheirbills,andthereportclarifiesthatmosthighincomeearnerswhoarelivingpaychecktopaycheckstillhavenoissuescoveringtheirexpenses—only10%to12%arerunningintoproblemspayingtheirbills.  Unlikeworking-classpeople,highincomeearnersgenerallyhavegoodcreditscoresandtheoptiontousecreditcardstomakepayments.Only48%ofallpaycheck-to-paycheckconsumerswhoarestrugglingtomakeendsmeethaverecentlymadeacreditcardpayment. “[Highincomeearners]arecreditworthybuttheyhavehigherfinancialobligationsandaremorelikelytoleveragetheircapitaltofinancetheirlives,”Nayarsaid. ThemajorityofAmericanshavebeenlivingpaychecktopaycheckforyears,butinflationhasmadefinanceseventighter.Pricesforfuel,food,andhousingarerisingfast,butaveragewagegrowthhassofarfailedtokeepup. InflationhasalsorockedwhatwasontracktobeanepicfinancialrecoveryformostAmericansafterthepandemic.Betweenmultiplestimuluspayments,highersavings,andlowerexpenses,mostAmericans’financesactuallyimprovedduringthepandemic,andarecentanalysisbytheFederalReservefoundthatAmericans’financialhealthlastyearwasthehighestit’sbeeninnearlyadecade.
