JiancingVillageislocatedinthecenterofWanrung,HualienCounty,withSilinVillageinthenorth,WanrungVillageinthesouth,NanpingVillage,FenglinTownshipintheeast,andCentralMountainRangeinthewest.JiancingVillageisthesmallestvillageinthetownshipwhereresidentsareunsophisticatedandhospitable.Approximatelymorethan90%oftheresidentsinthevillageareTrukupeople.TheTrukupeoplearenowhighlypopulatedinSioulinTownshipandWanrungTownshipinHualienCounty,andafewofthemresideinothervillages,LishanVillageinChuosiTownshipandthreevillagesinJianTownship–Chingfeng,Nanhua,andFusing.IntermsofthelaborstructureinJiancingCommunity,mostoftheresidentsengageinagricultural,industrial,andserviceindustries.Thereisnospecificindustrialoperationinthecommunity,andthelaborforceshavetolookforworkingopportunitiesoutsidethecommunity.Asaresult,thefamilyfunctionsinthecommunityareincomplete,resultinginmanyeducationalproblemsandthepopulation’ssenseofloss.Therefore,theroleandstatusofourschoolareparticularlyimportant.Inadditiontotakingintoaccountthephysicalandpsychologicaldevelopmentofchildreninthecommunity,ourschoolshouldalsoattachimportancetothethematiccoursesoflocalcultureandcooperatewithprivateandgovernmentunits,inordertosystemicallypreservethecultureofTrukupeople.Ourschoolestablishedaculturalclubtoexploreandinvestigatetheculture,andtheresearchprojectsofmanythemeshavebeencompletedandpublished,includingTrukuweaving,Trukurituals,Trukuhunting,andTrukufacialtattoo.Ourschoolinstructsstudentsinbasicacademicabilitiesthrougheducationprocess,whichalsoenablesthemtoindirectlyobtainabundantculturalintelligence. 2.SummaryofOurProject ThisprojectintroducedthecuisinecultureofTrukupeopleandconveyedtheTrukuculturethroughthesharingofrespondentsandthetextorimagerecordsoftheknowledgeandcookingskillsofTrukucuisineculture.Inrecentyears,becausein-depthtourismandhealthyfoodarequitepopularinTaiwan,Trukupeoplehavestartedtothinkabouthowtobringtourismintotheirtribe.Withtheassistancefrompublicdepartmentsandenthusiastsinthetribe,theculturalecologyandindustryofthetribehavebeenactivatedandputintomarketing.Althoughthereisn’tanynaturalandecologicallandscapeinJiancingVillageanditseconomicvalueofsporadicindustriesislimited,therearediversifiedculturalecologyandvaluableindustriesintheareaswheretheTrukupeoplereside.Thisyear,ourschoolselectedtraditionalcuisineofthetribeastheresearchthemetoprovidecourseswherestudentscanexperiencelocalcuisinesandtoconductinterviews.Thesharingoffemalecommunityvolunteersandthepersoninchargeoflocalcuisineenabledallthestudentstounderstandthetraditionalfoodinthepastandcreativecuisinesinmoderndays.Moreover,theintroductiontothetribe’scuisinerestaurantsalsoenabledthemtobetterunderstandthehistoryandecologicallandscape.Moreimportantly,allthetextorimagerecordsweretransformedintoknowledgeandpostedontheinformationplatformtobesharedwiththeworld.MorepeoplecanunderstandtheculturalinsightsintoTrukupeoplefromtheperspectivesofconveyance,respect,educationandaffection. 3.OurComputerandInternetAccess A.PercentageofstudentsusingtheInternetathome:lessthan20 B.NumberofworkstationswithInternetaccessintheclassroom:2-3 OurschoolsupportswirelessInternetaccess,andthecomputerclassroomisequippedwithhighspeedfiberbroadband.InTaiwan,whichisnowacountrywithadvancedinformationtechnology,mostInternetaccessproblemshavebeensolved.Ourschoolupgradedthecomputerinformationtechnologyequipmentin2011,andpurchasedequipmentforinterviews,suchasvideocameras,soundrecorders,anddigitalcameras.Studentshaveacompletesetofinterviewtoolsingroups. 4.ProblemsWeHadToOvercome (1)Technicaldifficulties:1.Problem:therearenumerousfilesonthesoundrecorderandvideocameraaftertheinterviewsthatneedtobetransferredtothecomputer,organized,andconverted.Theseworksrequiremoretimethantheclasssessions.2.Solution:thecoursecontentstrengthenstheinstructionontheuseofvideocamera,digitalcamera,andsoundrecorders,aswellasfiletransmission.Iftheseworkscannotbearrangedintohands-oncourses,theteachersandstudentswouldsharetheworkload.Theteacherswouldtransferthefilestothecomputer,andorganizeandconvertthefiles,whereasthestudentsareresponsiblefortranscribingtheinterviews.(2)Interviewoutlines:1.Problem:theinterviewoutlinesmustmatchtheresearchtheme,whilethethemeisdeterminedbasedonalargeamountofreferencematerials.Studentshaveinsufficientdatacollectionandorganizationability.Findinganswerswouldbeeasyforthem,buttransformingthedatacollectedintointerviewoutlinesisdifficultforthem.2.Solution:theguidanceoftheteacherisveryimportant.WhensearchforinformationontheInternet,theinformationmustbereadcarefully,inordertoensurethattheinformationmatchestheresearchtheme,andfacilitatetheinterviews.(3)Languageandexpression:1.Problem:Thestudentshadproblemsinquestioningtheintervieweesduringtheinterviews.Thepoorexpressionwouldmaketheintervieweesunabletoanswerthequestions.Duringthetranscribingprocess,asthevocabularyofthestudentsislimited,thetranscriptscontainmanyerrors,whichcausingproblemsinthesubsequentworks.2.Solution:theteachersservedattheintervieweesforpractice,andinstructionsweregivenafterwards.Ifthestudentsstillhadproblemsduringtheactualinterviews,guidancewasgivenimmediately,andtheteacherswouldexplainthestudents’situationstotheinterviewees.Thetranscriptswouldbereviewedandcorrectedbytheteachers. 5.OurProjectSoundBite AstheChinesesayinggoes,“Itisbettertotravelfarthantoreadvoluminously”.Ateveryperformanceorfieldvisit,Iseesmilesonstudents’facesthatIdon’tseeinschool.Fieldtripscancultivategoodlearningatmosphere,andIenjoyleadingtheteachersandstudentstoresearchtrips.Ialsoworkmycolleaguestodesigncourses,especiallymeaningandgoal-orientedactivities.Thestudentshavelearnedhowtodevelopinterviewoutlines,howtoconductinterviews,howtooperateequipment(videocamera,digitalcamera),howtocommunicatewithothers,aswellastranscribing,softwareuse,communitywebsitemanagement,writingreports,atSinbaiyangCulturalClub.Ireallyenvythemhavingthechancetobeexposedtothecoursecontentsthatareonlyofferedinuniversity. 6.HowdidyouractivitiesandresearchforthisCyberFairProjectsupportstandards,requiredcourseworkandcurriculumstandards? (1)Languageareas:Theteammembersraisedtheirlistening,speaking,reading,andwritingskillswhenthestudentscollectedinformationontheinternetandorganizedthemintothementalmapsoftheinterviewoutlineandwhenparticipatinginactualinterviewwrittendocumentation.(2)Socialfieldsandcombinedactivities:InthisCyberfairprojectthestudents,throughtheinternetandinterviews,cansimplydescribethelivingenvironmentfrompasttopresentandthemigrationoftheSinbaiyangTribe.Studentscanalsodescribethefoodingredients’nameandlocationoftherestaurantsinTrukuareasandinthevicinityneartheschool.Fromtherecordsoftheinterviewer,webetterunderstandeachvillage’suniquecuisineandtherelationshipofcommunityinteraction,andthebackgroundandcausesforprosperityanddecline.(3)InformationEducation:Eachclubmemberhasbeentrainedinsmallgroupcooperationtofindthesuitablewebsitesources,audioandvideorecordingfilesofcompletedinterviews,downloadingandreadingfiles,andtransferorestablishsimpleafilelibraryandmanageinformation.Memberscanfullyunderstandnetworkuseandbasicinternetoperation(includingoperatingtheFacebookcommunity,sendandreceiveemail,navigatebrowser,usingftp).(4)Familyeducation:StudentsparticipatinginCyberfairprojectcangettoknowcommontraditionalfoods,ingredients,andmakesimplemealsandarrangeextra-curricularactivitiestosharewithotherstheirfavoritefoods.Fromtheinterviewprocesswithfoodandbeverageoperators,theygottoknowtraditionalTrukuholidaymealsandfoodculture.Theseoperatorsalsousetheirknowledgeofcuisineandtourismtoaffirmandexpressthemselves,andtodevelopevenmorecreativecareerdevelopment. 1)Whatinformationtools&technologiesdidyouusedtocompleteyourCyberFairproject? (1)Socialnetworkingsites:ThroughtheapplicationofFacebooksocialnetworkingsitesandtheHualienCountyEducationOfficeChilainetworkteacher’ssocialnetworkingsite,thisbecamethecommunicationandknowledgemanagementtoolforteacherandstudentteammembercontact.Thisprovidesathirdpersonencouragementandsuggestionforbetterimprovementpriortoannouncementontheresearchwebsite.(2)Camcordersanddigitalcameras:Itisagreattoolforrecordthecommunitygoingon.Inordertoletthechildrenmakefulluseofdigitalcamcorderstheschoolappliedforsecond-handdigitalcamerasfromthepublicserviceplatformfoundation,sothateachstudenthasoneandmakesfulluseoftherecordings.(3)Scanners:Thiscanscanthestudents’picturesandreferenceimages,andisveryimportantforthecompletenessoftheinformationarchive.Thisschoolhas3A4sizescanners,2flatscanner,and1reel(suctiontype)scanner.Especiallyconcerningthereel-typescanner,students’manuscriptordrawingsketchescanbecopiedandtransferredtoPDFfile.Thisgreatlybenefitssubsequentdatavalidationandfirst-handinformationdownloading.(4)Voicerecorders:Recordthecompleteoralcontentoftheinterviewsubjectandanimportanttoolforcompilingpostinterviewwrittenrecordsofthevisit.(5)ComputerSoftware:Webpageproductionsoftware,mindmappingsoftware,imageprocessingsoftware,server,musicproductionsoftware,musicconversionsoftware,Doztranscriptionsoftware,etc. 2)Inwhatwaysdidyouactas"ambassadors"andspokespersonsforyourCyberFairprojectbothon-lineandinperson. Theparentsandinterviewsubjectsallsupporttheschoolinorganizingsuchmeaningfulcurriculumforeachoutsidevisit.Theyalsofeelpersonallyandmentionedthattheirculturemustbepasseddown.Becausetheeldergenerationareilliterate,havelowereducationalattainment,orhealthissues,theycannottaketheinitiativeinbringupthehistoricalandculturalpast.Today'syoungpeoplearealsoalienatedfromtheidentityoftheaboriginalculture,sotheschoolsguidanceinthechildren’ssystematicinterviewisabsolutelycorrect.Ofcourse,thechildrenarethegroupwiththemostpotentialinthe4generations,anditishopedthatthroughtheschool’scourses,theycanhavetheabilitytodescribethethingsthathappenedintheirownhometownorvillage.WeareamemberoftheSinbaiyangCulturalClub,thesmallvanguardofculturalheritage.Wewillcontinuethiskindofwork.Ifthereiscloseinteractionbetweenthecommunityandschool,thelocalculturewillnotdisappear. 3)Whathasbeentheimpactofyourprojectonyourcommunity? Thesefewyearstherehasalreadybeenasetbaseforstudentsthatcontinuouslyparticipateinthecultureexplorationcourses.Becauseourclubchangeseversixmonths,andsomestudentswanttolearnotherclub’scourses,sotheywillgiveupparticipationhalfwayinthatyear’sresearch.Therearealsosomepeerinfluences.WhatdoyouguysdointheSinbaiyangCulturalClub?Computerclassesarefreshinthebeginning,butlaterreportorganizationisverypainful,sointhepastfewyearsalmostthree-fifthsofthestudentsleave.Butthisyearisdifferent,becausethereisagroupofstudentsthatstillseriouslywanttocompletethismeaningfulresearchactivity.Atleastweseeinthemtheinsistentattitudeinaccomplishsomething. 4)Howdidyourprojectinvolveothermembersofyourcommunityashelpersandvolunteers? ThestudentsalwaysfindtheCyberfairprojectmeaningful,withasenseofachievement.Forexample,theowneroftheMasaiRestaurantexpressedherpersistenceintheTrukufood.Fromtheinterview,welearnaboutthetraditionalingredientsandtheinnovationinmodernfoods.Mr.andMrs.Doyongbuiltaparadiseoffinecuisinebygrowingvariousfoodingredientsthatweoftenheardbutneverseenbefore.Mr.Doyonggaveinterestingexplanationonthefoodingredients,whicharevaluabletoourresearch.Mrs.GuoofDageeli,despiteofthevariousobstacles,managedtosustainthebusinessthroughapplicationsofsubsidiesandsupportfromherfamily.ItwasregretfulthatHongyehHigh-raisedHousecloseddown,whichshowedthatdifficultyinmanagingaboriginalrestaurants.Thefailureexperienceisalsoworthoflearning.Thestudentshavecooperatedtocompletetheirtasks,andthelearningexperiencewillbememorabletothem. 5)Discoveries,LessonsandSurprises(Optional) Wefoundthattheinterviewsubjectsallhaveacommontrait.Thatis,toinsistonwhattheywanttoso.Whentheiraccumulatedwisdom,isbeingdiscoveredandrespectedbyus,thesenseofawethattheyshowtheancestralspiritsandtheconfidence,courage,andprofessionalattitudecouldnotbeseeninordinarylife.Theyemittheenergyoflifelongknowledge,andaweusintosteppingtowardsthehallowhallofcultureandsociety.
