KenjiHakutaetal.explainsthattherelationshipbetweenageandL1interferenceinL2productionisreallynotupfordebate: “Thediminishedaverageachievementofolderlearnersissupportedbypersonalanecdoteanddocumentedbyempiricalevidence….Whatiscontroversial,though,iswhetherthispatternmeetstheconditionsforconcludingthatacriticalperiodconstrainslearninginawaypredictedbythetheory”(31). Somelearnersmanagetoovercomethe“constraints”thatScovelbelievesare“probablyaccountedforbyneurologicalfactorsthataregeneticallyspecifiedinourspecies”(114),buttheselearnersareexceptionalratherthantherule.Itmaybebiology;itmaybeduetosomethingelse.Thedebatewillcontinue,butevidenceseemstoindicatethattheolderlearnersbecome,themoredifficultcompleteacquisitioncanbe.
