OpTicGamingwasestablishedin2006byOpTic"Kr3w"andRyan"J"MusselmanasaCallofDutysnipingteam.In2007,MusselmansteppeddowntohandovertheteamtoHector"H3CZ"Rodriguez.Theteammadeitsbeginningsinthecompetitivescenestartingin2010withCallofDuty:ModernWarfare2ontheXbox360.In2016,theteam,alongwithe-sportscommentatorRyan"Fwiz"Wyatt,releasedthebookOpTicGaming:TheMakingofeSportsChampions,whichdetailstheplayers'individualCallofDutyesportscareersandtheircontributionstotheteam'ssuccess.ThebookbecameaNewYorkTimesbest-seller,andfilmandtelevisionrightswereacquiredbyproducersJohnSacchiandMattGroesch.[3][4]In2017,TexasRangersco-ownerNeilLeibmanandco-investorChrisChaneyweresoldamajorityinterestintheorganization.TheycreatedInfiniteEsports&Entertainment,aholdingcompanythatincludesOpTicGamingandHoustonOutlawsaswellasotheresportsverticalsoperatingoutofanewDallasheadquarters.[5]OpTicGamingiscurrentlythethirdmostfollowedesportsteambysocialmediafollowing.[6]
OnJune12,2019,ImmortalsGamingClub(IGC)announcedtheacquisitionofInfiniteEsports&Entertainment,theparentorganizationofOpTicGaming.[7]OnSeptember15,2019,itwasannouncedbyImmortalsGamingClubandHector“H3CZ”Rodriguez,thatHectorwouldbeleavingfromOpTicasitsCEOfornewandindependentopportunities.[8]ShortlyafteritwasannouncedthatHectorRodriguezhadjoinedNRGEsportsasco-CEO.[9]
OnNovember6,2020,itwasannouncedthat100Thieves,anorganizationcreatedbyformerOpTicGamingplayerMatthew"Nadeshot"Haag,hadacquiredImmortalsGamingClub'sLACDLslotandwouldrebrandtheteaminthe2021seasonasthe"LosAngelesThieves".[10][11]Shortlyafter,onNovember11,2020,itwasannouncedbyImmortalsGamingClubandHectorRodriguezthatthelatterhadfullyreacquiredtherightstotheOpTicGamingname,thusregainingfullownershipoftheorganizationwhilealsorelinquishinghisminorityownershipofImmortals'LeagueofLegendsrosterinthedeal;[12]thatsameday,itwasannouncedthattheChicagoHuntsmen,theCallofDutyLeagueChicagoslotownedbyNRGEsports,wouldberebrandedtoOpTicChicago,thussignifyingthereturnofthe"realOpTic"totheCallofDutyesportsscene.
InNovember2021,itwasannouncedthatEnvyGamingwouldacquiretheOpTicGamingbrandaspartofamerger.OpTicGamingleaderHector“HECZ”Rodriguezjoinedthecombinedcompanies’ownershipgroupandwastoserveasPresidentofOpTicGaming.ThisalsobroughttheOpTicTexasrosterforActivisionBlizzard'sCallofDutyLeagueintotheEnvyfamily.
OnApril28,2022,theyannouncedtheysignedKnoqd,SkittleCakez,andDooplextoacompetitiveApexLegendsroster.
OnJune27,2022,itwasannouncedEnvyGamingwouldretiretheEnvybrand,andfullybecomeOpTicGaming.TheEnvyFoundation,agrantprogramhelpingNorthTexasmiddleschoolsandhighschools,isnowtheOpTicFoundation.Envy’sRocketLeagueteamhasalsobecomeOpTic'sRocketLeagueteam.TheDallasFuelteamintheOverwatchLeaguewillremainasis,goingintoits'fifthseasonintheOverwatchLeague.[13][14]

OnNovember12,2012,TreyarchreleasedCallofDuty:BlackOpsII,thesecondtitleintheBlackOpsseriesforCallofDuty..Thegamewasasuccesscompetitivelyandattractedabiggeraudiencethroughtheseason.WithFragCup4,anannualonlinetournamentatthestartofanewCallofDutytitle,comingupamemberoftheOpTicGamingcompetitiveteamwasunabletoplayduetogamblingrestrictionsinhisprovince,andafterimpressingearlyoninthegame,OpTicGamingpickedupNaDeSHoT,whorejoinedtheOpTicGamingcompetitiveteamonapermanentbasis.Theyfinishedinthe7th/8thpositioninFragCup4beforegoingtothefirstLANeventwhichwasUMGChicago.OpTicGamingstartedthetournamentstrong,makingtheirwaytothefinalswithoutlosing.Theteamthenlostthefirstseriesinthefinal.However,becausetheywerethewinnersofthe'winnersfinal'thematchwentintoafinalanddecisiveseries,inwhichtheywereabletowin3–2andbecomethefirstCallofDuty:BlackOpsIIchampions.
