Wastemanagementisalsoasectorwheremayorsexercisesignificantauthority,whichopensupopportunitiesforambitiousaction.Improvingwasteandmaterialmanagementcontributestomakingourcitiescleaner,healthierandmoreresilient. Furthermore,sustainablelifestylesdependverymuchonsustainablematerialsmanagement.Supportinginitiativessuchasrepaircafes,compostingfromsmallneighbourhoodstolargerscales,andincubatingstartupsthatareupcyclingmaterialsorevenreusingpartsofbuildingsinsteadofdemolition,notonlyallowsforzero-wasteeconomiesbutalsohasanenormouspotentialtocontributetothenumberofgreenandsustainablejobsinourcities.TheInternationalLabourOrganizationestimatesthatunderacirculareconomyscenario,45millionjobscouldbeaddedtothewastemanagementsectorby2030,aswellas50millionjobsinrelatedcirculareconomyservicessuchasrepairandremanufacturing. Focusareas: WastereductionPreventingandminimisingwastegeneration,includingrestrictingspecificmaterialstreams(suchassingleuseitemsandnon-recyclablematerials),incentivesystemstochangebehaviourandawarenessraising,andstrengtheningthedevelopmentofcircularlifestylesthroughzerowasteconsumptionoptions(reusablemugs,repaircafes,etc).IncreasediversionfromlandfillandincinerationImprovingthequalityofmaterialstreamsthroughsegregatecollection,programsandpubliccampaignsforenhancingrecyclingandreuseschemes,anddeployingcirculareconomyprinciples.ImprovedfoodandorganicwastemanagementImplementationofopportunitiesforavoidance,utilisationandtreatmentoffoodwasteandimprovingthepotentialofcarbonoffsetandsequestration. TheWastetoResourcesNetworkisledbySanFrancisco. ThenetworkparticularlysupportscitiesthathavesignedorplantosigntheAdvancingTowardsZeroWasteDeclarationinreachingthefollowingambitiousgoalsandtargets: Reducethemunicipalsolidwastegenerationpercapitabyatleast15%by2030comparedto2015.Reducetheamountofmunicipalsolidwastedisposedtolandfillandincinerationbyatleast50%by2030comparedto2015.Increasethediversionrateawayfromlandfillandincinerationtoatleast70%by2030.Read“GlobalFoodWasteManagement:AnImplementationGuideforCities”formoreinformation.
