Rotelearningissometimesdisparagedwiththederogativetermsparrotfashion,regurgitation,cramming,ormuggingbecauseonewhoengagesinrotelearningmaygivethewrongimpressionofhavingunderstoodwhattheyhavewrittenorsaid.Itisstronglydiscouragedbymanynewcurriculumstandards.Forexample,scienceandmathematicsstandardsintheUnitedStatesspecificallyemphasizetheimportanceofdeepunderstandingoverthemererecalloffacts,whichisseentobelessimportant.TheNationalCouncilofTeachersofMathematicsstated:Morethanever,mathematicsmustincludethemasteryofconceptsinsteadofmerememorizationandthefollowingofprocedures.Morethanever,schoolmathematicsmustincludeanunderstandingofhowtousetechnologytoarrivemeaningfullyatsolutionstoproblemsinsteadofendlessattentiontoincreasinglyoutdatedcomputationaltedium.[1]However,advocatesoftraditionaleducationhavecriticizedthenewAmericanstandardsasslightinglearningbasicfactsandelementaryarithmetic,andreplacingcontentwithprocess-basedskills.Inmathandscience,rotemethodsareoftenused,forexampletomemorizeformulas.Thereisgreaterunderstandingifstudentscommitaformulatomemorythroughexercisesthatusetheformularatherthanthroughroterepetitionoftheformula.Newerstandardsoftenrecommendthatstudentsderiveformulasthemselvestoachievethebestunderstanding.[2]Nothingisfasterthanrotelearningifaformulamustbelearnedquicklyforanimminenttestandrotemethodscanbehelpfulforcommittinganunderstoodfacttomemory.However,studentswholearnwithunderstandingareabletotransfertheirknowledgetotasksrequiringproblem-solvingwithgreatersuccessthanthosewholearnonlybyrote.[3]...
