PRACTICEASSESSMENT(BEFOREMAINTEST) EachassessmentpaperbeginswithaPracticeAssessmentwhichisfollowedbytheMainEntranceAssessment. ThePracticeAssessmentisintendedtoprovidepupilswithanopportunitytofamiliarisethemselveswiththestyleofquestionsintheMainAssessment,andtobecomeaccustomedtothemultiple-choicemethodofrespondingandtheuseofaseparateanswersheet. ThePracticeAssessmentcontainsbothfamiliarisationquestionsandpracticequestions.ThefamiliarisationquestionsareworkedthroughwiththepupilsandthecorrectanswersareprovidedwithexplanationsofthosecorrectanswersgivenbytheAssessmentInvigilator.Theyalsoprovideanexerciseintheuseofaseparateanswersheetwherepupilsarerequiredtomarktheirintendedanswer. ThepracticequestionsallowthepupilssometimetoworkindependentlythroughsomequestionsinpreparationforstartingtheMainAssessment.AnswersareprovidedforthesepracticequestionspriortothestartoftheMainAssessment. ENGLISH WARMUP(PRACTICE)EXERCISE TheEnglishassessmentpaperbeginswithaPracticeAssessmentcomprisingofashortreadingpassagewith3familiarisationquestions(comprehension)and7practicequestions(4spellingand3punctuation)whichtakesabout20minutestocomplete. Noneofthese10questionscounttowardtheoverallmark. MAINASSESSMENT(FORMAT) TheMainAssessmentthenbeginsandrequiresthepupilstoworkthrough50questionsin50minutes. Therearetworeadingpassages. For2021-22oneofthesereadingpassageswillbefictionornon-fictionandtheotherwillbepoetry(allfrom20thcenturyonwards).Bothreadingpassagesarefollowedby16comprehensionquestions. EachcomprehensionquestionhasA,B,C,DorEansweroptions.Therearealso9punctuationquestionsand9spellingquestionswhich,inadditiontoA,B,C,Dallhaveavalidansweroptionof“N”meaningthattherewasnomistakeorerror. Overall,64%ofthemarksareforthecomprehensionquestionswhichfollowthereadingpassagesand36%ofthemarksareforthespellingandpunctuationquestions. Comprehensionpassagesarepresentedinevenlyspaced12pttext.Theymaybeaccompaniedwithimagestoillustratethetext. ENGLISHASSESSMENTCONTENT ThecontentoftheEnglishassessmentpaperisintendedtoreflectaspectsofEnglishlanguageinvolvingcomprehension,vocabulary,punctuation,spellingandstudyskills. Theassessmentbookletshavebeendesignedassimulationsoftheusualbooklayout;titleandcontentspagesatthefront,index,andglossaryattheback.Thepassageschosenhavebeenselectedtorepresentavarietyofstylesandauthorshipandthetypesofpassageachildmightcomeacrossinthenormalcourseofreadinginschoolorathome.Thecontentofthepassagesissuitedindifficultyandinteresttochildrenintheagegroupbeingassessed. Oneofthereadingpassagewillbefictionornon-fictionandtheotherreadingpassagewillbepoetrybutnoneofthepassageswillbefromtextswrittenbeforethe20thcentury. Theoveralllengthofthereadingmaterialhasbeenreducedbyaround30%–40%comparedtopreviousEntranceAssessmentpaperswhichhadthreereadingsections;i.e.reducingthenumberofreadingpassageshasnotmeantincreasingthelengthofthepassages. Comprehensionisconsideredtobeofconsiderableimportanceandthisisreflectedinthestructureoftheassessmentpaper.Otherskillsoccupyasmallerproportionoftheassessmentquestions.Thequestionswhichfolloweachreadingpassagearephrasedinlanguagewhichissimplerinstructureandvocabularythanthereadingpassages. Thespellingandpunctuationexercisesuseshortpassagesofdialoguetakenfrompupils’literature. Theassessmentincludesthefollowing: Comprehension:literalandinferentialinterpretationofstatementsinthepassages.Vocabulary:meaningsofselectedwordsinthecontextofthepassage.SpellingandPunctuation:proofreadingskillsindetectingmistakesinprintedmaterial.
