DisadvantagesassociatedwithMCFCunitsarisefromusingaliquidelectrolyteratherthanasolidandtherequirementtoinjectcarbondioxideatthecathodeascarbonateionsareconsumedinreactionsoccurringattheanode.Therehavealsobeensomeissueswithhightemperaturecorrosionandthecorrosivenatureoftheelectrolytebutthesecannowbecontrolledtoachieveapracticallifetime. MCFCsareusedinlargestationarypowergeneration.MostfuelcellpowerplantsofmegawattcapacityuseMCFCs,asdolargecombinedheatandpower(CHP)andcombinedcoolingandpower(CCP)plants.Thesefuelcellscanworkatupto60%efficiencyforfueltoelectricityconversion,andoverallefficienciescanbeover80%inCHPorCCPapplicationswheretheprocessheatisalsoutilised.
