Theyoperateathightemperature,around650ºCandthereareseveraladvantagesassociatedwiththis.Firstly,thehighoperatingtemperaturedramaticallyimprovesreactionkineticsandthusitisnotnecessarytoboostthesewithanoblemetalcatalyst.Thehighertemperaturealsomakesthecelllesspronetocarbonmonoxidepoisoningthanlowertemperaturesystems.Asaresult,MCFCsystemscanoperateonavarietyofdifferentfuels,includingcoal-derivedfuelgas,methaneornaturalgas,eliminatingtheneedforexternalreformers. DisadvantagesassociatedwithMCFCunitsarisefromusingaliquidelectrolyteratherthanasolidandtherequirementtoinjectcarbondioxideatthecathodeascarbonateionsareconsumedinreactionsoccurringattheanode.Therehavealsobeensomeissueswithhightemperaturecorrosionandthecorrosivenatureoftheelectrolytebutthesecannowbecontrolledtoachieveapracticallifetime. MCFCsareusedinlargestationarypowergeneration.MostfuelcellpowerplantsofmegawattcapacityuseMCFCs,asdolargecombinedheatandpower(CHP)andcombinedcoolingandpower(CCP)plants.Thesefuelcellscanworkatupto60%efficiencyforfueltoelectricityconversion,andoverallefficienciescanbeover80%inCHPorCCPapplicationswheretheprocessheatisalsoutilised.
