Theeffectoftop-downinfluencesistochangetheinformationconveyedbyneurons,bothbyalteringthetuningoftheirresponsestostimulusattributesandbychangingthestructureofcorrelationsoverneuronalensembles. Allareasofthevisualpathway,exceptfortheretina,aresubjecttotop-downinfluences,includingearlycorticalstagesofvisualprocessingsuchastheprimaryvisualcortexandthelateralgeniculatenucleus,andallareasalongthedorsalandventralvisualcorticalpathways.Eachareacontainsanassociationfieldofpotentialinteractions,andexpressesasubsetoftheseinteractionstoexecutedifferentfunctions. Thesourcesoftop-downinfluencesarewidespread,witheachareaprovidinginformationreflectingthefunctionalpropertiesofthatarea.Asaconsequence,evenasingleneuroncanbeviewedasamicrocosmofactivityoccurringthroughoutthevisualpathway. Weproposethatthecircuitmechanismoftop-downcontrolandadaptiveprocessinginvolvesagatingofintrinsiccorticalcircuitswithinanareamediatedbylong-rangefeedbackconnectionstothatarea.Byselectingasubsetofinputs,aneuroncanexpressdifferentcomponentsofitsassociationfield,andasaresulttakeondifferentfunctionalroles.
