Allareasofthevisualpathway,exceptfortheretina,aresubjecttotop-downinfluences,includingearlycorticalstagesofvisualprocessingsuchastheprimaryvisualcortexandthelateralgeniculatenucleus,andallareasalongthedorsalandventralvisualcorticalpathways.Eachareacontainsanassociationfieldofpotentialinteractions,andexpressesasubsetoftheseinteractionstoexecutedifferentfunctions. Thesourcesoftop-downinfluencesarewidespread,witheachareaprovidinginformationreflectingthefunctionalpropertiesofthatarea.Asaconsequence,evenasingleneuroncanbeviewedasamicrocosmofactivityoccurringthroughoutthevisualpathway. Weproposethatthecircuitmechanismoftop-downcontrolandadaptiveprocessinginvolvesagatingofintrinsiccorticalcircuitswithinanareamediatedbylong-rangefeedbackconnectionstothatarea.Byselectingasubsetofinputs,aneuroncanexpressdifferentcomponentsofitsassociationfield,andasaresulttakeondifferentfunctionalroles. AbstractRe-entrantorfeedbackpathwaysbetweencorticalareascarryrichandvariedinformationaboutbehaviouralcontext,includingattention,expectation,perceptualtasks,workingmemoryandmotorcommands.Neuronsreceivingsuchinputseffectivelyfunctionasadaptiveprocessorsthatareabletoassumedifferentfunctionalstatesaccordingtothetaskbeingexecuted.Recentdatasuggestthattheselectionofparticularinputs,representingdifferentcomponentsofanassociationfield,enableneuronstotakeondifferentfunctionalroles.InthisReview,wediscussthevarioustop-downinfluencesexertedonthevisualcorticalpathwaysandhighlightthedynamicnatureofthereceptivefield,whichallowsneuronstocarryinformationthatisrelevanttothecurrentperceptualdemands.
