Atthetime,theNorwegianshippingindustrywasexperiencingrapidgrowthandbreakingoutofitstraditionallocalboundaries.Anemerging,nationwidemarketformarineinsurancewasneeded.ThreeyearslaterinGermany,agroupof600shipowners,shipbuildersandinsurersgatheredinthegreathalloftheHamburgStockExchange.ItwasthefoundingconventionofGermanischerLloyd(GL),anewnon-profitassociationbasedinHamburg. In2013,DNVandGLmergedtoformDNVGL,whichwasrenamedtoDNVin2021.Socialdrivers Societybecameanincreasinglydemandingstakeholderinthepredominantlyprivate,liberalmaritimeindustry.LoadlinesdevelopedbySamuelPlimsollbecamecompulsoryoneveryBritishshipfrom1891,savingthelivesofseamenalongtheBritishcoasts.LoadlinesbecamemandatoryinNorwayin1907. TheTitanicdisasterin1912broughtsafetyatseatotheforefrontofpublicconcern.Internationalclassificationsocietiesplayedanimportantpartindiscussionsonshipsafety.Nevertheless,GL’smanagingdirectorCarlPagelandJohannesBruunfromDNVweretheonlyofficialclassificationindustrydelegatesattheadoptionofthefirstInternationalConventionfortheSafetyofLifeatSea(SOLAS). AfterWWI,thetransitionfromsailingshipstosteamersbroughtafundamentalchangeintechnologyandskillsneededfortheclassificationindustry.Theoutdatedclassificationrulesforconstructionofshipswerenolongerinharmonywiththeshipbuildingmethodsofthetime.Between1920and1940DNVwastechnicallyindependent,andestablishedanewcultureprioritizingengineering,constructionanddesign. WhenGeorgVedelerwasappointedDNV’smanagingdirectorin1951,heintroducedamorescientificapproachtoshipconstruction.Hisvisionwastobuildsafershipsinamoreefficientway,usingscientificcompetenciesandskills.Newrulesbasedonananalyticalandtheoreticalscientificapproachwereintroduced,andasignificantstepwastakentowardsestablishingadedicatedresearchdepartment.ThisprovidedopportunitiesforDNVinthemoredemandingsegmentsofshipbuilding,whichinitiallyinvolvedthenewsupertankersandlaterextendedtogasandchemicaltankers.ThefleetwasstillpredominantlyNorwegian,butinternationalizationwastakingoff.GLalsotookascientificapproachindevelopingtheorganizationafterWWII.Thisledtotheintroductionofhigh-poweredcomputeranalysis,enablingthedesignandconstructionoflargerandmoremodernships.GL’sresearchinvestmentsresultedinnewconstructionrulesforcontainerships,andthecompanysoondominatedthissegmentwithininternationalshipping. NorthSeaoilboom DNVwaswellpreparedintermsofcompetenceandimpactwhencommercialoilwasdiscoveredintheNorthSea.ThefirmcametoplayanimportantroleinthisnewindustrywithinNorwayasanadvisorforbothauthoritiesandoilcompanies.DNVuseditsexperienceandtechnologicalcompetencewithinthemaritimeindustrytodevelopandintroduceoilandgasverification,inspectionandriskmanagementservices.Theworld’sfirstpipelineruleswerepublishedbyDNVin1976,settingaglobalstandard.Fromtheearly1970’s,DNVwasofferedmostofthebuildingsupervisionandinspectionassignmentsontheNorwegiancontinentalshelf.OffshorefloatingrigsandsupplyvesselsalsobecameastrongnewsegmentforDNVintraditionalshipclassification.Emergingindustries In1977,windenergywasintroducedasanewbusinesssegment.This,andotherclimate-friendlyserviceareasrepresentednewopportunitiesfororganizationalgrowthfromastrong,research-driventechnologybase.Newrulesweredeveloped,andcertificationofland-basedandoffshoreturbinesbecameanimportantgrowthareaforDNV. Inthelate1980sandearly1990sthenewindustryofmanagementsystemcertificationbasedonISO-standardsemerged,andbothDNVandGLtookglobalpositionsintheexpandingTestingInspectionandCertification(TIC)industry.Ageofalliances Alliances,mergers,andacquisitionsbecameastrongstrategicdriverinthelate2000s.TheacquisitionsofAdvantica(UK)in2008andTrident(Malaysia)in2009broadenedGL’sservicescopetoconsultancyservicesintheoilandgassectors.ThemergerwithNobleDentonin2009furtherexpandeditsactivitiesinoffshoretechnicalservices.ThiswassupportedbytheacquisitionsofPVI(Canada)in2007,MCS(US)in2008andIRS(Singapore)in2009,whichadvancedtheinspectionbusiness.In2009,GLacquiredtheworld’slargestwindenergyconsultancy,UKbasedGarradHassan.GLhadalreadyacquiredtheCanadianwindenergyconsultingandengineeringcompanyHélimaxandtheGermancompanyWINDTEST,expertsonmeasurementsforwindturbinesandwindfarms.This,coupledwiththe offshorewindexpertiseofNobleDenton,meantthatGLwasabletodeliverafullserviceapproachwithacomprehensiveserviceportfoliotowardsthewindenergysector. In2005,DNVacquiredCCT(US),aspecialistincorrosioncontrolandpipelineandplantintegrityanalysis.ItfollowedupwiththeacquisitionsofUS-basedGlobalEnergyConceptsin2008andBehnke,ErdmanandWhitaker(BEW)in2010.Tosupportprevailingstrategieswithinthenewclimate-friendlyservicefields,DNVestablisheditsSustainabilityCentreinBeijingin2009andaCleanTechnologyCentreinSingaporein2010.In2012,DNVandKEMAjoinedforcestocreateaworld-leadingconsulting,testingandcertificationcompanyfortheglobalenergysector.KEMAwasestablishedbytheDutchelectricalpowerindustryin1927,andhadsubsequentlydevelopedintoahighprofileinternationalbrandthatprovidedservicestotheglobalenergysector.Theseincludedrenewableenergy,carbonreductionandenergyefficiency,powergeneration,transmissionanddistribution.Thecompanyoperatedanumberofstate-of-the-artlaboratories,includinghigh-powerandhighvoltagelabs,oneofwhichwasextendedin2017tobecometheworld’sfirstfacilitycapableoftestingultra-highvoltageelectricalgridcomponents. OnSeptember12,2013DNVandGLmerged.GLwasownedbytheprivateequityfirmMayfair,whobecameaminorityowner(36.5%)ofthemergedcompany,whiletheremaining63.5%wasownedbytheFoundationDetNorskeVeritas,anindependent,self-ownedfoundation.In2017,theFoundationDetNorskeVeritasbecamethe100%ownerofthemergedcompany,whichin2021changeditnamefromDNVGLtoDNV.TodayDNVisagloballyleadingqualityassuranceandriskmanagementcompanyoperatinginmorethan100countries.Withover100,000customersacrossthemaritime,energy,foodandhealthcareindustries,aswellasarangeofothersectors,DNVempowersitscustomersandtheirstakeholderswithfactsandreliableinsightssothattheycanmakecriticaldecisionswithconfidence.
