VariousschoolsinIndiaandabroadareusingandexchangingtechnologies,methodologiesandpedagogiestonurturegloballeaders.JamesNeillhassurveyedvariousschoolsaroundtheworldandtriedtofindoutthebestschoolsintermsofteachingmethodologies. AshokaUniversalSchool(AUS),Nashik,India InIndia,ithasbeentraditionalforschoolstoemphasisechildren’slearningbyrote,aone-size-fits-allapproach.Buteducationsystemselsewherefocusontheunderstandinganddevelopmentofanindividual’sabilitiesandattitudestoalloweachstudenttoreachtheirfullpotential. AshokaUniversalSchool(AUS)inNashikhasdecidedtotakethismorepersonalisedapproachtotheeducationit offerstoitsstudents.ShalluSethi,VicePrincipal,explains:“Childrenareoftentaughttosucceedinexamsbyrememberingandreproducingdata,butwefeltourstudentshaddeepercapabilities.Over4,000childrenof3to18yearsattendourschool.Theycomefromadiverserangeofbackgrounds,nationalitiesandreligions.Wewantedawaytoexploretheirindividualabilities.” TheschoolnowteststheirstudentswiththeCognitiveAbilitiesTest(CAT4),whichmeasuresreasoningabilityacrossfourareas:verbal,non-verbal,quantitativeandspatialability.Itgivesvaluableinsightintostudents’strengthsandweaknesses,andenablesteacherstoadapttheteachingmethodssuitabletotheneedsofthestudents. “Forexample,therewasoneeightyearoldboyinGradethreewhodidn’texcelinclass,yetitturnedouthisspatialabilitywasthehighestintheclass–animportantindicatorforsuccessinScience,Technology,EngineeringandMathematics(STEM)subjects.Weobservedthat hislowverbalreasoningwasholdinghimback.Nowwefocusonhisverbalreasoningtohelphimrealisehispotentialwithinscienceandmaths.” Byanalysingwholeschooldata,AUShasbeenabletoclearlyidentifytwoweakerareasaffectingtheirstudents. “Thefirstwastheverbalbatterywhereourscoreswerecomparativelylow,”Sethiexplains.“We’verealisedthatsomechildrenarenotworkingattheleveltheirabilitiessuggest.Lowliteracyamongthesechildrenisholdingthemback.Wearenowtakingstepstoincreaseourliteracyinterventionssothatthechildrenareabletorealisetheirpotentialacrossscience,mathsandsocialsciences”,shesaid. “Thesecondwasquantitativereasoning.Theresultsfromtwodifferentclasseswerecomparativelylow,indicatingtheneedforgreatersupport.Identifyingtheseareashasgivenusthechancetoworkonwaystoenhanceclarityaroundtopicsandgiveadditionaltrainingtoteachersonhowtomeetlearningrequirementsifappropriate”,sheadded. Ensuringthatteachingstaffaresupportedthroughthischange,theschoolhassharedresultswithparentssothattheycantalkaboutitduringopendaysandeffectivelyenhancetheirchildren’slearning. Thisisonlythestartofthejourney,butwithcarefulplanningandprovidingstrongsupporttotheteachingstaff,theschoolisalreadyseeingthebenefits.AsShalluSethiconcludes,“IhavelearntalotfromCAT4–ithelpsinensuringthatweareontherighttrackforaworldclasseducation”. GEMSWellingtonPrimarySchool,Dubai,UAE Alongsideability,theotherkeydriverofstudentattainmentisattitude. Severalstudies,withfocusonProgrammeforInternationalStudentAssessment(PISA)ofOrganisationforEconomicCo-operationandDevelopment(OECD),havefoundthat“studentscanonlyachievethehighestlevels,whentheybelievethattheyareincontroloftheirsuccess”.WhentheOECDlookedspecificallyattheissueofstudentconfidenceorself-efficacyonperformanceinmaths,itdiscoveredadefinitecorrelation.“Onaverage,acrossOECDcountries,greatermathematicalanxietyisassociatedwitha34pointlowerscoreinmathematics–equivalenttoalmostoneyearofschool.” Youngpeople’sattitudetowardslearningandschoolthereforematterenormously.Yeteducatorshavenot,withsomenotableexceptions,giventhemtheweighttheydeserveoridentifiedwhenattitudesstarttochange. AtGEMSWellingtonPrimarySchoolinDubai,theschool’sguidingprincipleisthebeliefthatchildrenneedtobehappyinordertolearnsuccessfully.TheschooldecidedtointroduceGLEducation’sPupilAttitudestoSelfandSchool(PASS),arobustsurveythatmeasuresstudents’attitudesaslearnerstowardsthemselvesandtheirschool.Ithelpsteachersdrilldownintoanynegativemind-setsthatmaynotbeobviousintheclassroom. InJanuary2016,theschoolscreenedstudentsbelongingtogrades2to6,acrossninefactorsproventobelinkedtokeyeducationalgoals,suchasfeelingsaboutschool,self-regardandconfidenceinlearning.Thisledtoatargetgroupof56childrenwhowereidentifiedasatriskoflowattainmentduetotheirnegativeattitudestowardsthemselvesandschool. Theschool’sSeniorLeaderforStandards,RosemaryElmes,says:“Theresultsweresurprising,asthe‘atrisk’listincludedchildrenwereallydidn’texpect.Infact,whenweputtogetheraphotogalleryof thesechildren,oneseniorleadershipteammemberexpressedsurprisethataparticulargirlwasbubblyandconfidentinlessons.Yetshedidn’teverdoaswellattestsasweexpected,soitwasimportanttodelvefurtherandexplorewhythatmightbe.” Armedwiththisinformation,variousprogrammesofinterventionwereintroduced.Theschoolthenre-assessedthesechildrenfourmonthslatertoseewhathadchanged.Theyweredelightedwiththeresults. A33percentimprovementacrossthetargetgroupwasachieved,whichplacedallbutthreechildrenintothetoppercentileforhighsatisfactionlevelintermsoftheirschoolexperience. Ahugechangehasalsobeenseen amongspecificchildren.Forexample,oneboyinYearthreehadachievedan80percentimprovementacrosstheninefactors.Hisconfidenceinhimselfasalearnerhadbeenextremelylow,butwithtargetedencouragementandpartnerworkfocusingonhowotherchildrenachieve,hewasabletotakethoserisksandexperiencedsuccess.Histeachercouldn’tbelieveitwasthesamechild!
