Comments Traditionallyinflectionisdistinguishedfromderivation(thesecondtypeofmajormorphologicaloperation).Althoughitisnotpossibletodrawasharpboundarybetweenbothtypesofoperation,thereareatleasttwodifferences:(i)inflectionisnevercategory-changing,whilederivationoftencategorychanging,and(ii)inflectionisusuallyperipheraltoderivation.Somelinguists(e.g.Aronoff(1976),Anderson(1982),Perlmutter(1988))assumethatinflectionandderivationbelongtodifferentcomponentsofthegrammar.Thisviewisnotuncontroversialthough,sinceothers(e.g.Halle(1973),Kiparsky(1982))assumethatinflectionandderivationarereflexesofoneandthesameoperation,namelyaffixation.
