Singaporeclinchedthetopspotforpublictransportaffordability,andalsoscoredwellintransportefficiencyandsafety."Singaporehascreatedabest-in-classpublictransportsystem,whichisaccessible, efficient,convenient,sustainable,andatthesametimeaffordable,"thereportsaid.Thereportnotedthata majorsteptowardaffordabilitywasmadein 2013,whenthefareswerereviewedandnewmeasureswereintroduced,including a15percentdiscountonadultfaresforlow-wageworkers,freetravelforchildrenandsevenotherconcessions. Asaresult,morethanonemillionpublictransport passengersbenefitedfromthenewschemes,McKinseysaid.Thecityalsoscoredahighratingforsustainability,withoneofthe"safestandmostecologicallysustainable"publictransportsystems,accordingtothereport. Thereport saidtheconvenienceandflexibilityoftheSingaporeanticketingsystem,usingtheEZ-Linkcard,wasanother"outstanding"feature.  HIGHSATISFACTIONAMONGSINGAPORERESIDENTSInadditiontoobjective dimensions,thereport lookedatpublicperceptionbasedonsurveysof400residentsineachcityonhowsatisfiedtheywerewiththemobilityoptionsavailabletothemaswellastheirsenseofwhetherthesystemtheyusedwaschangingforthebetter. Morethan30transportationexpertswerealsoconsultedtoweighthelistofindicatorsandcorrespondingaspectsaccordingtotheirimportanceandimpactonthequalityoflife. Of theresidentssurveyedinSingapore,morethan80percentsaidtheyweresatisfiedwiththeoverallpublictransportsituation. Thiswashigherthanthe71percentthatwassatisfiedwiththeoverallsituationinprivatetransport.TheMcKinseyreportstatedthatSingaporeresidentswere themostsatisfiedonmanyoftheaspectsanalysed,ascomparedtoresidentsglobally.Electronicservices,suchastripplanners,andtheirevolutionwereamongthetransportfeaturesthatresidentssurveyedsaidtheyenjoyedthemost.However,thesurveyrespondentswereconcernedwiththeaffordabilityofprivatetransport,whichthereportnotedwasaresultofSingapore'sdeliberatecarlimitingpolicy.HONGKONG,SEOULANDBEIJINGALSORANKEDHIGHLY Basedonthereport,fouroutofthetop10citiesforpublictransportwereinAsia-asidefromSingapore, HongKong,SeoulandBeijingalsomadeitontothelist. McKinseysaidthatHongKong had amongthebest publictransportcoverage intheworld,with75percentofthepopulationand 94percentofworkplacesbeingwithin1kmofametrostation.Notably,thecityscoredpointsforits"advanced"ticketingsystem,the Octopuschipcard,which canbeusednotonlytopayfortransportandnon-transportservices,butisalsousedfornon-paymentpurposes,suchasaccesscontrolforofficebuildings.Italsohadthehighestrankingforpublictransportsafety,with lowerratesofpublictransitfatalitiesperonemillionpeopleascomparedtoother cities. Seoulwasrankedsecondamongallofthecitiesforitspublictransportefficiency,withitsprogress drivenbythe optimisationofbusroutesandconstructionofexclusivemedianbuslanesthat increasedbusspeedsbyanaverageof30percent,accordingtothereport.Thedevelopmentofanintelligentbusmanagementsystemalsoplayedacrucialroleinoptimisingbusheadwayand stayingonschedule,makingbusservicesmorereliable,thereportfound. Beijingrankedamongthetop10acrossallfivedimensions,comingin10th-aheadofSingapore's12th-intermsofitsrailinfrastructure.Ofthecitiessurveyed,20wereselectedbasedonsize,levelofeconomicdevelopment,transportationsystemcharacteristics,andavailabilityofdata.Fourmore-Berlin,HongKong,ShanghaiandSingapore-werechosenbecausetheirtransportationsystemswere"consideredoutstandingbyexternalinstitutions",accordingtoMcKinsey.  Source:CNA/mz(hm) Advertisement Alsoworthreading Contentisloading...
