YouTubehasfacedcriticismfromallsidesoveritsvideoremovalprocess.SomecriticsarguethatYouTubecoulddomoretotakedownvideosthatbuttupagainstthecompany’srulesbutdon’toutrightviolatethem;othersarguethatYouTubeoughttobeafullyopenplatformandshouldn’tcontrolwhatremainsupandwhatdoesn’t.Executiveshavelongdefendedtheplatformasachampionoffreespeech,buthavestartedtoclampdownonthetypeofvideosallowedtocirculate. Companiesupdatetheirtermsofserviceallthetime—thisisYouTube’sthirdchangejustin2019.TheselatestupdatesseeminglycoincidewithupcomingchangesYouTubewillmakeinaccordancewithnewFederalTradeCommissionguidelinesforYouTube,althoughaYouTuberepdeniesthesechangesweremadebecauseoftheFTCruling. “YouTubeisundernoobligationtohostorservecontent” Specifically,manyoftheupdatescenteraroundwho’susingtheplatformandprotectionforchildren.InSeptember,theFederalTradeCommissionissueda$170millionfineagainstGoogleforallegedviolationsofthechildren’sonlineprivacyprotectionact(COPPA).YouTubealsoagreedtomakechangestofurtherprotectchildren’sprivacyandcomplywiththelaw.
