Structureddatadependsontheexistenceofadatamodel–amodelofhowdatacanbestored,processedandaccessed.Becauseofadatamodel,eachfieldisdiscreteandcanbeaccessesseparatelyorjointlyalongwithdatafromotherfields.Thismakesstructureddataextremelypowerful:itispossibletoquicklyaggregatedatafromvariouslocationsinthedatabase. Structureddataisisconsideredthemost‘traditional’formofdatastorage,sincetheearliestversionsofdatabasemanagementsystems(DBMS)wereabletostore,processandaccessstructureddata. UnstructuredData Unstructureddataisinformationthateitherdoesnothaveapredefineddatamodelorisnotorganisedinapre-definedmanner.Unstructuredinformationistypicallytext-heavy,butmaycontaindatasuchasdates,numbers,andfactsaswell.Thisresultsinirregularitiesandambiguitiesthatmakeitdifficulttounderstandusingtraditionalprogramsascomparedtodatastoredinstructureddatabases.Commonexamplesofunstructureddataincludeaudio,videofilesorNo-SQLdatabases. Theabilitytostoreandprocessunstructureddatahasgreatlygrowninrecentyears,withmanynewtechnologiesandtoolscomingtothemarketthatareabletostorespecialisedtypesofunstructureddata.MongoDB,forexample,isoptimisedtostoredocuments.ApacheGiraph,asanoppositeexample,isoptimisedforstoringrelationshipsbetweennodes. TheabilitytoanalyseunstructureddataisespeciallyrelevantinthecontextofBigData,sincealargepartofdatainorganisationsisunstructured.Thinkaboutpictures,videosorPDFdocuments.TheabilitytoextractvaluefromunstructureddataisoneofmaindriversbehindthequickgrowthofBigData. Semi-structuredData Semi-structureddataisaformofstructureddatathatdoesnotconformwiththeformalstructureofdatamodelsassociatedwithrelationaldatabasesorotherformsofdatatables,butnonethelesscontaintagsorothermarkerstoseparatesemanticelementsandenforcehierarchiesofrecordsandfieldswithinthedata.Therefore,itisalsoknownasself-describingstructure.Examplesofsemi-structureddataincludeJSONandXMLareformsofsemi-structureddata. Thereasonthatthisthirdcategoryexists(betweenstructuredandunstructureddata)isbecausesemi-structureddataisconsiderablyeasiertoanalysethanunstructureddata.ManyBigDatasolutionsandtoolshavetheabilityto‘read’andprocesseitherJSONorXML.Thisreducesthecomplexitytoanalysestructureddata,comparedtounstructureddata. Metadata–DataaboutData Alastcategoryofdatatypeismetadata.Fromatechnicalpointofview,thisisnotaseparatedatastructure,butitisoneofthemostimportantelementsforBigDataanalysisandbigdatasolutions.Metadataisdataaboutdata.Itprovidesadditionalinformationaboutaspecificsetofdata. Inasetofphotographs,forexample,metadatacoulddescribewhenandwherethephotosweretaken.Themetadatathenprovidesfieldsfordatesandlocationswhich,bythemselves,canbeconsideredstructureddata.Becauseofthisreason,metadataisfrequentlyusedbyBigDatasolutionsforinitialanalysis.
