Tocheckitout,Ire-tookaplacementtestforKorean,andstartedaddingkardsattheB2Lowlevel. TheappgivesasimpleuserinterfacetothecorefeaturesoftheGlossikawebsite.It’sahugeimprovementoverthewebexperienceonmobile. Thedesignisfairlysimplevisually,whichisnicetosee—it’snotcomplicated. Myonlygripeisthatthere’salotoflagbetweenactions(e.g.goingtothenextcard— multipleseconds),Ithinkbecausetheappdoesn’tdownloadanythinguntilitneedsit.Thismakestheappseemslow. So,theGlossikaiOSappisanimprovementoverthebase,butnowherenearasquickandeasyasusinganAnkideck. Also,there’snoAndroidappyet,whichexcludesalotofusers(mostphoneusers,actually). WhyDoWeUseGlossika? There’sanemergingschoolofthoughtthatwordsdon’thaveanintrinsicmeaningoutsidecontext.Andmanywordsdefinitelychangesubtlyinmeaninglanguage-to-language. Considerthesentence“It’sraining”.That’showyouexpressitinEnglish.IfyoulearnthattheFrenchverbfor“torain”ispleuvoir,though,andthentrytotranslatead-hoc,youmightcomeupwith“ilestpleuvant“,whichisanonsensesentence.It’s“ilpleut“. We’vestudiedmorethantenlanguagesbetweenus,andwefindmostappstobegameswithaneducationalbent.Someofthemaretoohardtousetomakeeffectiveuseofthecontent(IcouldnevermakeuseofthecontentinMondly,forexample).Somedoteachthings,butonlyasaside-effect. SoherearesomereasonswelikeGlossikaasanactualtoolthathelpswithlanguagelearning. Reason1welikeGlossika:Spacedrepetitionofrealaudiomeanswelearn Firstly,theaudioinGlossikais100%natural. Withmostapps,you’reneverreallysureiftheaudioisrealistic.Youfindyourselfthinking:“Isthatthecolloquialwayofsayingit?Anddopeoplespeakthatclearly?Wait,isn’tthattooformal?” WithGlossika,we’vetestedenoughlanguages(someofwhichare.nativetous)toknowwithconfidencethattheaccentandpronunciationis100%nativeandnatural Secondly,Glossikaforcesyoutolistenactively. Withmanyotherapps/websites,youdon’tevenhavetolisten.Youcanjustread.Andifyoulisten,it’stemptingtojustlistenonceortwiceandnevergobacktoit. ItriedusingGlossikafirstwithKorean—butitdidn’tgowell.I’velearnedtonsoflanguages,andamusedtobeingoverwhelmedanduncomfortable.ButtheresultwasthatIwasconfusedalotofthetimeandIlearnedslowly. InKorean,therearemanywaystoendasentencetomodifyitfortone.Ittakestimetolearnallthese—longerthanittakestolearnconjugations,forexample.Soittookaround3monthsofself-studyofKoreanbeforeIfeltcomfortableusingGlossika.Istillfindsomesentencesconfusing. ContrastwithArabic,whereIspenttwoweekswithabookfirstandlearnedconjugation,somewordsandthewaysentenceswork,andthenstartedGlossika.Eventhoughtheirplacementtestonlyputmeattheverybottomrung,Iactuallyprogressedandlearned. Afterlearningthebasicsofanylanguagefromabookfor2-4weeksyou’llstarttofeellikeyouwanttohearhowsentencesareactuallymade.ThisiswhereGlossikashines. Tip2:Don’tjustuseGlossika Glossikais,onpaper,purportedtobetheonlytoolyouneedtolearnalanguage.Youwilldefinitelylearnalotthroughit. However,Glossikaisnotallyouneedtolearnalanguage,forthefollowingreasons: Glossikamostlyjustencouragesyoutolistenandrepeat.Youcanoptionallytypethings,andrecordyourvoice. Butthesestillaren’tdialogue,orlistening,orhavingactualconversationswithpeople.Thebestwayyoucanlearnisstillwithateacher. Glossikadoesn’tteachwhatyoupersonallywanttolearn.Ifyoumostlytalkaboutmotorcycles,weightlifting,andcoffee(justarandomexample,nobodyIknowpersonally),Glossika’svocabularyisn’tgoingtobesuitable. ButIneverlearnedthesentence“Iamtryingtoeatlessmeat,butthatdoesn’tmeanIliketofu,”whichissuperusefultome. You’llwastetimeinGlossikatryingtoguess/infergrammarwhensomeonecouldjustexplainittoyou.You’resmart.Youprobablycanfigureeverythingoutonyourownbyinference. Butyoudon’thavetoguess.You’renotanarchaeologistwhojustdiscoveredtheRosettaStone;you’reanadultwhocanaskquestionsandlearnrules. Tip3:Actuallyrepeatwordsoutloud.(MumblingisOK) Atitscore,aswementioned,Glossikaisallaboutlisteningandrepeating.Theysayyoucan“mumbleyourwaytofluency”.Butwhatdoesthismean? “Mumbling”soundsdubious,buttheymeansayingit“inyourhead”isNOTenough.Youneedtoarticulatethewords. Tip8:Beaggressiveinmarkingthingsaseasyorhard—don’twastetime Glossikagivesyoutheoptionofmarkingeverysentenceyoulearnwithaheart(❤️)orasmiley(😊).Butthesedon’thavetheintuitivemeaningyouthinktheydo. Heartemoji(❤️):Thismeansthissentencewashard.Youlikeit,andknowit’simportant,soyouwanttokeepstudyingit.Smiley(😊):thismeansthissentencewaseasy.Itfeltgood.Youdon’tneedtoseeiteveragain.(Wow,harshinterpretationofasmileyface).
