IalwaysseemtostartthesereviewswithabitofanasideandthisasidewillfocusonSamRockwell.SamRockwellisoneofmyfavoriteactors,personally.Idon'twannasaythiswithoutsoundinglikeI'minsultinghim,buthe'salsonotoneofthebestactorsI'veeverseen.AndIreallydon'tmeanthisasaninsult,becauseI'mcomparinghimto,say,someonelikeaDanielDay-Lewis,whosededicationtohiscraftandthecharactersheinhabitshavemadehimthebestI'veeverseen.SamRockwellisn'tatthattrulyelitelevel,buthe'sonlyafewslightnotchesbelowthat.ThethingaboutSamisthat,regardlessofwhattypeofrolehehastoplay,healwaysdeliversconsistentlygreatperformances,evenifthemovieendsupbeingabsoluteshit.He'soneofthoseguysthatIcanwatchinabsolutelyanythingandIwouldbefinewatchingitbecauseSamRockwellisinit.There'sveryfewactorsIcansaythatfor,atleastinmyowncase.Havingsaidthat,IfeltthatRockwellwassnubbedofanOscarforhisperformanceinSevenPsychopaths.Youdon'tknowhowfuckinggreatthisguywas.Hell,hewasevensnubbedofaNOMINATION.Like,seriously,watchRockwellinSevenPsychopathsandtellmehowheDOESN'T,attheveryleast,deserveanomination.That'snottosaythatIdon'tthinkRockwelldidn'tdeservetowinitforthismovie,ashewasfantasticinhisportrayalofatroubledandviolentcop,butinawayIthinkit'salsotomakeupfornotgivinghimthatnominationforSevenPsychopaths.Isupposeit'snotfairtotalkaboutthismovieand,quitefrankly,notmentiontheabsolutelyamazingperformancefromFranceMcDormand.AnotherwelldeservedAcademyAwardwinforanactressthat,quitefrankly,Ithinkalotofussleepon.Andthat'sjustashame,becausesheisabsolutelyincredibleandprovesitonceagaininthismoviewithalayered,nuancedandbeautifullyangryperformanceasthishardenedwomanwhoseeksjusticeforherdaughter'srape/murderbyputtingupthreebillboardsputtingChiefWilloughbyonblastfornotmakinganyarrestsinherdaughter'scaseaftersevenmonths.And,lastly,IhavetotalkaboutMartinMcDonaghandhisinnateabilityatdrawingcareer-bestperformancesoutoftheactorsinhismovies.HedidthisforColinFarrellinInBruges(whichIneedtoseeagain).HedidthisforRockwellinSevenPsychopaths.AndhedidthisagainforMcDormand(who'shadastellarcareer)andRockwellagain.Hetrulyisanactor'sdirectorandthere'snowaythatcanbedenied.And,obviously,hisabilityatwritingincredibledialoguethattellstoriesthatyouimmerseyourselfin.Inshort,asifitwasn'tobvious,Iabsolutelylovedthismovie.Sometimes,there'smoviesthatyouwatchandyou'relike'damn,thisiswhyIlovemovies'andthisisoneofthose.AndthisistakingintoconsiderationthefactthatIHAVEseenbettermoviesthanthisand,yet,forsomereasonoranother,thismakesmehappytolovemoviesasmuchasIdo.Whichisastrangethingtosayaboutsuchadarkmovie.That'sthething,thismovieisn'treallyafraidtogotosomedarkplacesintermsofexploringtherelationshipbetweenMildredandherdaughter(thatwascontentioustosaytheleast),Mildred'srelationshiptohersonandMildred'srelationshiptothetownofEbbing,whoseemtoturntheirbacksagainstherasaresultofheractions.Interestingideastoexplore,giventhatthetownitselfralliesaroundChiefWilloughbyasaresultofhiscancerdiagnosis.Inmanyways,itremindsmeofthewholedealwithNFLplayerskneelingatthenationalanthemandpeopletakingitassomesortofunpatrioticmovedisrespectingthememoriesofdeadsoldiers.Firstofall,nosoldiereverdiedfortheanthem,let'sgetthatstraight.Secondly,thefactofthematteristhattheseNFLplayersarestandingupagainstinjusticescommittedagainsttheblackcommunityandtheseNFLplayersarejustcallingattentiontothat,wherethoseresponsiblefortheseinjusticesdonotpayfortheircrimes.Andthatremindsmeverymuchoftheoutcrythebillboardscausearoundtown.Mildredisn'tinsultingChiefWilloughbyoranythingofthesort,shejustwantsanswersforherdaughter'srapeandmurder.Shehadn'theardanythingfromthecopsinsevenmonthsuntilsheputthebillboardsup.Nowthey'realloverher.ThingsarefurthercomplicatedwhenChiefWilloughbykillshimselftoavoidwastingawayduetocancerandthetown,unfairly,blamesMildredforaddingmorestresstohisalreadyprecarioussituationwithherbillboards.AsIalreadymentioned,themovieisimpeccablywrittenandcast,soinspiteofpotentiallytouchingonsomeverytouchysubjects,Ithinkthemoviedoessowithanincrediblyadepttouchthatdoesn'tdisrespectitscharactersorthesituationsitpresents.Havingsaidthat,thismovieisalsoveryfunny.Ironicallyenough,it'ssomethingliketheCoenswouldmake.AndIsayironically,becauseFrancesMcDormandismarriedtoJoelCoen.I'mnottryingtosuggestthatthismovieis,inanyway,aripoffoftheCoenbrothers,butyoucanseethesimilarities.MartinMcDonaghstillhashisownuniquetouchandwonderfullyoffensivedialoguethatmakesitstandout.Ilovethecharacterdevelopmentinthismovie.BecauseMildredgivesoffthisvibeofbeingatough,hardenedwomanandshereallyis,butyoucantellthatthisiseatingherupinside.Sheisawomanthathasbeenpushedtothispointbythecops'inabilitytofindthepersonculpableforthiscrime.She'sveryvulnerablecharacterandyougettoseebriefglimpsesofthatandit'sgreattosee,becauseitshowsyouthatMildred,inspiteofthisvibeshegivesoff,isawomanthatisreallyhurting.Butyoucantellthatsheisaverycaringwomanaswell,asgivenbyherresponsetoWilloughbyafterheaccidentallycoughsupbloodinherface.Orherscenewhenshetalkstoadeer.Reallygreatcharacterand,obviously,amazingperformanceFrancestogiveliveandhearttothisperson.Willoughbyisalsoaninterestingcharacterinthatyoucantellthathe'sagoodman,thathefeelsforMildred'ssituationandhowhewisheshecouldfindtheone(s)responsibleforwhathappened.Hissuicidewasalsoquiteunexpectedaswell.There'sthesesceneswhenWilloughby'swife,Dixon(Rockwell'scharacter)andMildredallreadsuicidenotesthatareallquiteheartbreaking,lovelyandfunnyallinequalmeasure.IthinkhislettertoDixonisprobablythebestofthemallasitreallyinspiresachangeinamanthat,really,seemedtohavenoredeemablequalities.Hebasicallytellshimtoletgoofthehateandembracethelove.Themoviealsoraisessomeinterestingquestion,becauseDixoncomesacrosssomeonehethinksmightbeAngela's(Mildred'sdaughter)murderer,laterinthefilmafterhesufferssevereburnsasaresultofMildredburningdownthepolicestation.HetakessomeDNAfromtheguyafterpurposelygettingintoafightwithhim.But,sadly,itturnsoutthathewasnottheguy.DixonapologizestoMildredforgettingherhopesupandthentheysetoffonajourneytomurderthismanwhoisinnocentofAngela'srapeandmurderspecifically,butheisstillarapist.Andthatbringsaninterestingquestiontomindastowhether,forMildredatleast,killingarapistand,mostlikely,amurderertoo,justnotherAngela'srapistandmurderer,wouldbeenoughtogiveMildred(andDixon,toanextent)somepeaceofmind.Toughquestiontoask,really.Well,thereyouhaveit.Idon'treallythinkIcansaymuchelseaboutthismovie.Ithoughtitwasfantasticanditfeaturessomeofthebestactingyou'llseefromanyfilmfrom2017.McDormandisoutofthisworld.Rockwellisincredible.Therestofthecastisimpeccableaswell.Writingisfantastic.Thishaseverythingyoucouldaskforandthensome.Thisisquitetheeasyrecommendation.It'sthatfuckinggreatofamovie. JesseO SuperReviewer Aug28,2018 Thereissomuchpent-uprageoverthehandlingofrape,andpolicebehavioringeneral,thatIthinkFrancesMcDormand'scharacterinthisfilmreallystruckachordwithpeople.She'sonacrusadeforherdaughterwhowasrapedandkilled,andyetnoprogresshasbeenmadeintheinvestigation.Shedoesn'tcarewhosheoffends,shewon'tbeintimidatedintosilence,andshe'llstandupforherselfinsomeviolentways.Inaninterestingtwist,thepolicechief(WoodyHarrelson)haspancreaticcancer,soasidefrombeingcalledoutonhisinvestigation,he'sdealingwiththat.ThesceneMcDormandandHarrelsonhaveinaninterrogationroom,andaspecificmomentofthatiseasilythefilm'sbest.Harrelsonprovidesavoiceofwisdominthefilm,andthethreelettershepensarealsoquitetouching.Thereishumoraswell,injusthowboneheadedoneofthepolicemen(SamRockewell)is,andthegemofamomentwhenPeterDinklage,otherwiselargelywasted,utterstheline"Penelopesaid'begets'?",inasubtleburnofthe19-year-oldnowdatingMcDormand'sex-husband. Thefilmstartedstrong,butalongthewaystartedlosingme.Itsuffersartisticallyfromalackofrestraint,andeverythingseemsexaggerated.Theprofanity.Thecharacters,whostartbecomingcartoonish.Thelevelofviolence.Thecoincidences.ItseemstomethatMcDonagh'swritingisarealissuehere.Herlastwordstoherdaughterwere"Ihopeyougetraped,"really?Toleavethatinthescriptisegregiouslybad,andaninsulttotheviewer'sintelligence.TheMolotovcocktails,really?Theguybeinginthestationtobeginwith,andofcoursewearingearbuds,really?Amanthrownoutofawindow,andnoarrest,really?Andonandon,untilanendingwhichisprettyawfulifyouthinkaboutit.It'sjusttoughtoappreciatethemessageofthefilmoritscastinlightofallthis.Itwasentertainingtowatch,butinmyhumbleopinion,notworthyofalltheacclaim.
