TheEloratingsystemisamethodforcalculatingtherelativeskilllevelsofplayersintwo-playergamessuchaschess.ItisnamedafteritscreatorArpadElo,aHungarianAmericanphysicsprofessorandchessplayer.[1]
TheElosystemwasinventedasanimprovedchessratingsystem,buttodayithasbeenadaptedforuseinmanyothergames.Variationsofitarealsousedasaratingsystemformultiplayercompetitioninanumberofgamesandhasbeenadaptedtoteamsportsincludingassociationfootball,Americancollegefootballandbasketball,andMajorLeagueBaseball.
InLeagueofLegendstheEloratingofaplayerisusedbythematchmakinginrankedgamestofindotherplayersofasimilarskillleveltoplaywith/against.EloisnotusedforcustomandCo-opvs.AIgames.TheEloratingforrankedgamesisdifferentforeachqueuetypes:3v3arranged,5v5soloand5v5arrangedteams.Theratingisonlyvisibleforrankedgamesafter10gamesplayedinacertainqueuetype.Asummoner'sNormalgameEloremainshiddenatalltimesandcanonlybeguesseduponbasedoffhisorherwin/lossratioandtheapparentskillofteammatesandenemies,althoughnotperfectlyaccurateasnormalqueuesarelessstringentasopposedtorankedqueues.PlayerswereawardedwithmedalsintheirsummonerprofilebasedontheirEloattheconclusionofSeasonOne.Thesemedalsweregivenasfollows:[2]

ThespecificformulasusedforElocalculationsinLeagueofLegendsareunknown.However,mostEloimplementationssharethesamebasicsasthatoriginallydesignedforchess.Abriefsummaryisgivenbelow.Foramoredetaileddiscussion,seeWikipedia.
Itisassumedthataperson'sperformancevariesfromgametogameinapproximatelyanormaldistributionandaperson'sEloratingisthemeanofthatdistribution.ApersonwithahigherElomayperformbetteronaveragethanaplayerwithalowerElo,althoughusuallyitismainlytodowiththeteamworkaroundthatplayer.Thisscoreisdeterminedentirelybywin/lossstatisticsinrelationtootherplayers.ForplayersAandBwithrespectiveEloratingsofRaandRbtheexpectedvictoriousoutcomeEaofthegameforplayerAisgivenbythefollowingformula:
Foreverydifferenceof400points,theteam/playerwiththehigherscoreistentimesaslikelytowinastheotherteam/player.ThisstandardisforChessandmaybedifferentinLeagueofLegends.Afteragametheactualoutcomeiscomparedtotheexpectedoutcomeandeachteam/playersratingisadjustedtobringthemclosertowheretheyshouldactuallybe.Asaresult,ifateamwasexpectedtowinanddoestheirscorechangeslessthaniftheywhereexpectedtoloseandinsteadwon.Successivegamesshouldeventuallybringeachplayer/teamtoapointwheretheyareexpectedtowin50%ofthetimeagainstopponentsofequalscore.
Aplayer'schangeinratingislineartothedifferencebetweentheexpectedoutcomeandtheactualoutcome.ItisgivenbythefollowingformulawhereSaistheresultofthegameandispresumably1forawinand0foraloss.
Themagnitudeofthescorechangeisdeterminedbytheplayer'sKvalueandotherthings,likeaservercrash(Whenthescoreyougetis50%).InchessinitiallythisKvalueisbig(25fortheirfirst30games)resultinginlargechangesinElo.Thisissoaplayercanrapidlyfindherorhiscorrectplaceintherankingsystem.AstheirnumberofwinsandlossesbecomesmoreeventhisKvalueisreducedtopreventdramaticchangesinEloagainstevenlymatchedopponents(K =15to7).ThisalsopreventsinflationinratingsathighEloplay.ItappearsthatLeagueofLegendsusesasimilarsystemofchangingKvalues:Kappearstostartaround100,eventuallylevelingouttoabout25.[3]
AllplayersstartrankedplaywithanEloof1200fortheirfirst10gamesatlevel30.Fromtheretheyareassignedascoreandchangesaremadeasnormal.[4]
