TheyfirstfoundoutthatSMsdidnothaveexceptionalcognitiveabilities.Infact,theydidnotevenshowsuperiorperformanceonvisualmemorytasks(forexample,therecalloffaces). ThepaperfurtherinvestigatedthebrainstructureoftheseSMs,andfoundoutthattheirbrainswerenotsignificantlydifferentfromaveragebrains(Maguireetal2002). ThescientistsalsoperformedfunctionalMRIscanstoseeiftheSMsbrainswereactivateddifferentlywhenactivelymemorizing. HeretheSMsbrainsdifferedfromnormalbrains–SM’sbrainsactivatedparticularlywhenmemorizing(Maguireetal2002). Significantly,scientistsfoundoutthatSMsallusedmnemonictechniquestoaidintheirmemorization.NineoutoftenofthesesubjectswerespecificallyusingtheMemoryPalace(Maguireetal2002). Note:SomeofpeoplecallittheMindPalacemethod,butthebasicsarethesame. Plus,thedifferentactivationpatternsobservedwereassociatedtothefactthatSMsusedmnemonictechniques,namelytheMemoryPalace,tomemorizeinformation(Maguireetal2002).   NoNeedForAHugeIQToUseAMemoryPalace!   It’snotthatSMsaresmarterorhavebiggerbrainsthantherestofus.It’sthattheyusemnemonics,andspecificallytheMemoryPalacetomemorizesemanticinformation. Acontrolgroup,asetofvolunteersofthesameaverageage,sexandeducationwasincludedinthestudy.TheywerenottrainedintheMemoryPalacetechnique,andwereinstructedtomemorizethelistaswell(Engvigetal2010). Afterwards,bothgroupswerereleasedintotheworldtolivenormallyforeightweeks. Whentheyreturnedtothestudy,researcherschallengedbothgroupstoarecalltask. TheResults Theyfirstflashedalistof15unrelatedwords,eachforonlyasecond.Thevolunteersweretheninstructedtorecallthewordsinorder. Researchersthenshowedthemalistof30words.Halfofthesewordshadbeendisplayedintheinitial15wordlistwhiletheotherhalfwascompletelynew. Thevolunteerswereaskedtopickoutwordsthathadpreviouslyappearedandalsoidentifytheircorrectpositioninthefirstlist(Engvigetal2010). VolunteerstrainedintheMemoryPalaceoutperformedthenon-trainedvolunteersforrecognizingthepositionofthewords(Engvigetal2010). Thestudyalsomeasuredtheamountofbrainthinningthatoccurredinthetrainedversusuntrainedgroupsofvolunteers.Normalagecausesthebraintoshrink.
