1StarOverview:Ishouldhaveknownbetter.Idon’thaveanexcuse.IreadGillianFlynn'sotherbook,GoneGirl,lastyear—andwasn’tafan.Everyoneravedaboutit,butIfoundthecharactersshallow,theplottwistsweak,andthenarrativesobusybeingcynicalitdidn’tseemtoknowwhatitwastryingtosay.Nevertheless,I’dheardgreatthingsaboutGillianFlynn’swriting.SoIwentintothiswithanopenmind---maybeIhadjuststartedwiththewrongbook!ButIreallyshouldhaveknownbetter.WhenIwantedtoDNFthisaround13%ofthewaythrough,IshouldhavetrustedmyinstinctsandrealizedFlynn'swritingjustisn'tforme.ButIkeptseeingreviewstalkingabout“thetwist”andhowtheendingwasthebestpart.SoIpersevered.Safetosay,Ididn’tlikethis.ActuallyIthinkIdislikeditmorethanGoneGirl.*languageandmaturethemesahead,duetothenatureofthisbook*Pros:Idon’tliketoratethingssolow.Ireallydon’t,andIrarelydoit.Iwasinitiallygoingtoroundthisuptoatwo-star,butIrealizedIdidn'thavearealreason.Ihave'criteria'forallmyratingsandinordertoearntwo-starsfromme,abookhastocontainsomeelementsIliked.ThiscontainedahandfulofdescriptionsIliked.That’sit.Atpointsinthetext,Flynncomparesanew-foundmurdervictim’sappearancetothatofababydoll,withmouthopenandreadytosuckle.ThiswasanincrediblycreepysimilethatIthoughtpaintedthescenequiteclearly.Thenlater,Flynndescribesawomanashaving“hipslikeantlers.”Inregardstothebonyprominencethatjutsoutagainsttherestofthewoman'sbody.Again,Ithoughtthiswasanincrediblyinventivedescriptionthatalsoperfectlyillustratedthecharacter.Cons:Ohboy.Herewego.Whatwerethesecharacterssupposedtobe?Everysinglecharacterwasfilledwithanintensehatredandcynicismabouteverything.Theywereallincrediblyviolent,shallowpeoplewithnootherdefiningcharacteristicsTheywereallveryboring,flatpeoplewhojustseemedtobeawfulwithoutanymotivation.ItseemsFlynn’sworkreliesuponabeliefthatallpeopleareinherentlyevilandselfish—whichisapopulartheoryinitselfthatI’veseeninawidevarietyoffiction.Butthecharactersstillneedtomakesense.Everythingwasneedlesslydark?LikeIjustdon’tunderstand?Idon’thaveaproblemwithdarkerbooks.Ithinkastorycanbejustasdarkandtwistedastheauthorfeelsitneedstobe,aslongasitstilltellsthestorywellThisjustseemedtoincluderandomgrittydetailsorsupppppeeerrrintensedescriptions.Themaincharacter’sstrugglewithmentalhealthproblemsandself-harm(isthisaspoiler?It’sprettyevidentfromthebook’sblurb)wasneverdiscussedinanysortofnuancedway.Instead,it’susedalmostasaplotdevicetoshowjusthow“edgy”thisbookis.Idon’tmindprofanityoradultmaterialinadultbooks.Buttheover-abundanceofitinthisbook,again,justseemedlikeitwastryingtohardtobegrittyor“edgy.”Everythingwasneedlesslysexualizedevenwhentheconversationsorcharactersdidn’tcallforitatthattime.ThisbookwastooshorttobesoboringThepacewasirrationallylanguiddespitetheintensesubjectmatter,anditfeltlikeittookchaptersandchaptersforthecharacterstostopjustdiscussingthingsandforthingstoactuallyhappen.There’sbeenafairlylargeamountofcontroversysurroundingthewayGillianFlynn,aself-proclaimedfeminist,writesherfemalecharacters.Youhavethosewhothinkit’sproblematicallofherfemalecharactersaresuchawfulpeople:LikeTheHuffingtonPostandothers.Andthenyouhavethosewhobelieveallhercharactersarehorriblepeople,andthatfeminismmeansallowingforfemalevillainsandanti-heroes:IncludingFlynnherself.Iwon’tbetouchinguponthiscontroversytoomuch,asIdon’tthinkthere’sverymuchIcansaythathasn’talreadybeendiscussed.Ipersonallywantfemalevillainsandanti-heroeswhoarejustascomplexastheirmalecounterparts—whichIdidn’tfindinthisbookwhereallthecharactersweresoshallow.Therewereafewthingsthatdidseemproblematic:- Themaincharactercallsamana“sexist,liberalleftypracticingsexualdiscrimination”forbelievingadrunkwomanhavingsexwithanentirefootballteamwithoutherexplicitconsentwassexualassault.Evenwhenwhenitwasrevealedthewomanwasaminor.- Thisentirequote:“SometimesIthinkillnesssitsinsideeverywoman,waitingfortherightmomenttobloom.Ihaveknownsomanysickwomenallmylife.Womenwithchronicpain,withever-gestatingdiseases.Womenwithconditions.Men,sure,theyhavebonesnaps,theyhavebackaches,theyhaveasurgeryortwo,yankoutatonsil,insertashinyplastichip.”-
