ThetraditionsofJesus’earthlyministryandPassionwererememberedandthenwrittenintheGospelaccounts.Theywerewrittenfromthepost-ResurrectionperspectiveandcontainanextensiveandcommonPassionnarrativeastheydealwiththeearthlyministryofJesusfromhindsight.Itisalsotobenotedthat,intheevangelists’accounts,theirtheologicalpresuppositionsandthesituationsoftheiraddresseesmoldedtheformationofthefourcanonicalGospels,whichwerewrittenafterthelettersofSt.Paul.TheprimaryaffirmationsofChristianity—ofJesusastheChrist,hismessageofthekingdom,andhisResurrection—precededtheevangelists’accounts,andsomeoftheseaffirmationswereextrapolatedbackward(muchastheExoduseventcentralintheOldTestamentwasextrapolatedbackwardandwasthetheologicalpresuppositionforthepatriarchalnarrativesinGenesis).Thesestorieswereshapedbythepurposefortheirtelling:toinspirebelief.TheircreedalbeginningwasexpandedwithmaterialaboutthelifeandteachingsofJesus,whichareverenceforandapreoccupationwiththeholyfigureofJesusdemandedoutoflovingcuriosityabouthisearthlyministryandlife.
